NEW • Development Release: openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 3
openSUSE Henne Vogelsang has announced the availability of the third milestone of openSUSE 11.2: "The third of seven scheduled milestone releases for 11.3 was completed and released on schedule. Milestone 3 focuses on using GCC 4.5 as the default compiler, leaving a great deal of the work in the hands of the openSUSE Build Service after a few issues (such as kernel panics) were resolved. Here's what you may find interesting in the new release: a bug in Milestone 2 prevented mounting of encrypted home folders - this has been resolved; zypper can now interrupt PackageKit, via D-Bus, eliminating a major annoyance during updates and additional installs; a Milestone 1 issue with starting X.Org on i915 hardware has finally been resolved...." 2010-03-17 Development Release: PCLinuxOS 2024 Beta 2
PCLinuxOS The second beta release of PCLinuxOS 2024 is now available for download and testing. What's new? "Linux kernel updated to 2.6.32.10 - updates, bug fixes and suggestions based on community feedback over the past week were implemented on the live CD. In addition to the KDE 4.4.1 version, we now have GNOME, Phoenix Xfce, PCLXDE and GNOME Zen Mini ISO images available which showcase the various desktops available on PCLinuxOS. An Enlightenment desktop ISO image is also in the works and should be available sometime this week. PCLinuxOS 2024 was built from the ground up using the packages in our repository. This weeks changelog: fixed menu translations; dropped most of PulseAudio out of system, KDE now gets ALSA analog and digital devices by default; temporarily removed admin functions from system settings menu until I can package it in to an RPM...." NEW • Development Release: SimplyMEPIS 8.5 RC3
MEPIS Linux Warren Woodford has announced that the third release candidate for SimplyMEPIS 8.5 is ready for testing: "MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 8.5.00, RC3 of MEPIS 8.5, now available from MEPIS and public mirrors. We've updated the kernel to 2.6.32.10. The release notes from the Linux kernel team indicated that they have been hard at work making improvements. We have changed the live media to use isolinux. This gave us the opportunity to add a hardware exploration tool to the boot options. Also we've expended the number of languages that can be selected at live boot. Soon we expect to take advantage of this to build a larger international Live media release, that will have appropriate KDE localizations built-in. There have been a number of improvements to the MEPIS Assistants." See the remainder of the release announcement for additional notes. http://www.mepis.org/node/14245

NEW • Development Release: Parsix GNU/Linux 3.5 Test 1
Parsix GNU/Linux Alan Baghumian has released the first development build of Parsix GNU/Linux 3.5, a desktop distribution and live DVD based on Debian's testing branch: "The first set of Parsix 3.5 'Frankie' testing ISO images are out. Although this is the first testing ISO, the system stability is very good and there shouldn't be any strange errors or problems. This version is synchronized with Debian testing repositories as of March 7, 2024, bringing tons of updated packages. These ISO images are compiled using Squashfs 4.0 with LZMA compression and, for the first time, we are using GRUB 2 as the default bootloader. The kernel build system has been modified and improved vastly to produce better kernel packages. Our brand new 2.6.32.9 kernel with improved configuration is patched using the latest TuxOnIce and Con Kolivas's BFS performance patches." Development Release: CrunchBang Linux 10 Alpha 1
CrunchBang Linux Philip Newborough has announced the availability of the first alpha release of CrunchBang Linux 10. A lightweight distribution featuring Openbox and Xfce, CrunchBang is now based on Debian GNU/Linux, rather than Ubuntu. From the release announcement: "The first alpha release of CrunchBang 10 is now available. Code-named 'Statler', this release is, for the first time, built using Debian sources. The alpha 1 is available to download in two main flavours, those being Openbox and Xfce. Both the Openbox and Xfce editions currently feature the same line-up of applications and the new Xfce edition has had its session set-up to mimic that of previous CrunchBang Openbox sessions." There are an amazing number of derivative distros, suppliers, and of course users awaiting this software. A very interesting phenomenon.

It is getting so when Ubuntu, or Debian, or SuSE, or Mandriva or one of the BSD's, or.... put out a new version, thousands of folks get to work on their offerings dependent on the aforementioned to some degree. As the distros supposedly become more diverse, they become more similar in small ways.

Then there are the maybe a dozen WM, the main unifying element that is used by said distros...But mainly KDE, GNOME, xfce, LDXE, ....

hmmmm

I do love FOSS

Until PCLOS 2024 reproves itself with months of demonstrated stability (PCLOS recently revoked a released version since that version wouldn't install for many people), I'll let Ubuntu LTS show me how stable it is. After all, Ubuntu people talk the talk when they discuss LTS, lets see how it goes for me, the killer of distros.

Up until now, the BEST Ubuntu release, from my perspective, was the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS release. This upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 LTS promises to be pretty solid, not full of bugs, and I suspect it is nearly ready, but I confess that I have not yet tried this one out yet - I almost certainly will, replacing one of the current releases with this one as soon as I get a chance to do so.

Just a little hint, at least if you have a decent ISP. I recommend grabbing a copy of a fairly recent BEta test or Release Candidate. Once you get to the last Beta or a Release Candidate, the number of package changes to upgrade it to final form is not that great, and you generally get better bandwidth by doing it a week or two before the actual release. We are down to the final month. Whether you do it now, wait a few weeks, or whether you prefer to wait until after release is up to you; my experience is that download speeds are superior around now and the number of changes are generally not too overwhelming, especially compared to running some of the very volatile systems that I am used to running, such as the daily changing Mandriva "Cooker" and the "unstable" Debian Sid based systems. Worth consideration, but that's just my opinion on it.

I may grab it by this weekend, if not a little sooner, and install it as soon as I get a chance.

I tend to go the other way.... I wait until the smoke clears, then I go see how the forums are dealing with various issues, then I consider the values of what I've learned and heard. If that comes to a half way decent result, I'll grab it. The biggest issues have been my broadcom based wifi card, and since PCLOS got it right 2 years ago, hopefully Ubuntu/Canonical/Debian has taken the time to see how the RPM world gets the job done.

I will wait and see. With all the complexities arising in Linux (the integration of bluetooth is changing, KDE 4.X is being adopted yet still a little funky, the rise of LXDE, udev is being revamped, etc, etc.), I feel that Ubuntu is going to lose its edge. Efficacy meaning that I believe the distro will not do as good a job on this release supporting so many diverse options at such an appealing level of simple user configuration.

I did grab the first Beta test of the 10.04 LTS (what is the code name, Lucid Lynx or something like that?) It installed smoothly over the release I had been using (both Kubuntu variations). The boot screen is now a muted shade of Purple-Blue (they have a nice name for it, and it is pretty nice). The Kubuntu theme is an understated blue, also reasonably attractive, but conservative. The KDE splash and Wallpaper themes can be readily modified, either with Kubuntu themed variations or anything from the extremely diverse collection of themes from the KDE Looks site - which you can access directly from the KDE configuration tool.

As far as performance and features, while I did not run it over the coals, heating and burning it up, I did try several of the common things I do and I found no major issues. One irritant for me is that by default the Ubuntu based systems assume that the internal clock is being managed according to UTC settings, so the flag UTC=yes is set - and I don't want that. The default tools don't give you a way to change it, either, requiring you to use sudo and get into a text editor to modify the /etc/defaults/rc.S (I think I have the name right) resource file. Not difficult; just change UTC=yes to UTC=no, but this should be configurable from installation and it isn't. Fine if you prefer to set your time with the internal clock using UTC, but I prefer using localtime on my clock, so this always results in me having to change Ubuntu based systems.

Other than that, though, everything was fine, and that did not get in the way of the desktop working just fine for me.

I got the new SuSE ISO's. Seeding now. I notice the new SuSE 10.3 test 4, which is basically still a BETA, has the 2.6.33 kernel and many of the new changes, Be interesting to see where this goes. Would not miss it for anything in the World <G><

Well I've just run 9.10 livecd and 10.04 beta livecd (amd64) and here's what I've noticed:

1) 10.04 beta picks up my Dell 30" monitor and gives me 2560x1600 automagically

2) the new Gnome theme is really polished, very muted, and growing on me, though I'd rethink the icon set before RC personally

3) 9.10 picks up my HFS+ formatted iPod but 10.04 doesn't, but I can mount it manually

4) 10.04 is feeling more sluggish (as a livecd) than 9.10 (as a livecd), but that could be down to the media - I pulled out a pretty ancient CD-RW for 10.04 whereas 9.10 came with a linux magazine I picked up at Heathrow recently

5) 10.04 trims the Applications menu even more than 9.10, they're really going for the simplicity angle here

I think this is going on a partition later this afternoon, I'd like to kick the tyres properly

Oh and I've also got that clock problem - they really should fix that ... does Debian have that problem, seems we discuss this UTC vs local time relative to Debian derivatives a lot recently ...
