A Comparative Look at Compact Sysadmin Distributions
Sep 19, 2008, 01 :33 UTC (0 Talkback[s]) (471 reads)
(Other stories by Cory Buford)

"Each of these distributions is easy to use -- just insert the CD or plug in the USB drive on which it's installed, then boot. Each gives you access to a variety of open source tools that you can use to manage disks, partitions, and files and perform diagnostics and network troubleshooting. These distributions provide most of the tools that you might need in an emergency situation."

http://openthinclient.org/home

The current openthinclient-0.3.0 downloadable release should work on any WINDOWS/LINUX/UNIX/POSIX operating systems with Java 6 installed. A Sun Java 6 (JRE or SDK) is available hereexternal link.
http://openthinclient.org/home
Please have at least a glimpse at the Installation, Prerequisites and openThinClient manager pages before installation.

Don't be alarmed by some funny software characteristics: This early open source release still includes some known issues and bugs of a more or less serious kind Wink. Have a look at the issue tracker where all open bugs are listed and a road map is availible.

Do not hesitate to send us feedback about any problems regarding this version. Just drop a mail to openthinclient-user@lists.sourceforge.net.

Have fun!

Distribution Release: Clonezilla Live
You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®, and its OpenSource counterpart, Partition Image. The problem with these software packages is that it takes a lot of time to massively clone systems to many computers. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition® with multicasting. Well, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting!

Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, partclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!

The CryptoNAS project brings data encryption to the masses.

* The CryptoNAS live-CD is made for people who want to encrypt their data without bothering about complicated technical issues.
A computer running the CryptoNAS live-CD works as a fileserver (NAS) that encrypts your private data.

* The CryptoNAS-Server package adds a user friendly, web-based frontend for harddisk encryption to an existing fileserver.

Take a look at the CryptoNAS usage example!
It may give you a better understanding of what the CryptoNAS does and how it works.

PostPosted: Thu Nov 20, 2008 9:25 pm    Post subject: Craine digital Forensics Reply with quote

CAINE (Computer Aided INvestigative Environment) is a GNU/Linux live distribution created by Giancarlo Giustini as a project of Digital Forensics for Interdepartment Center for Research on Security (CRIS), supported by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The project does not aim to propose “yet another forensic tool” or a framework for collecting open source programs, because many forensic distributions already exist (e.g., Helix, FCCU, Deft). The CAINE forensic framework contains a collection of tools wrapped up into a user friendly environment. Furthermore introduces novel important features; it aims to fill the interoperability gap across different forensic tools, it provides a homogeneous GUI that guides digital investigators during the acquisition and analysis of electronic evidence, and it offers a semi-automatic process for the documentation and report compilation.

CAINE provides the user with following main novelties:

* Interoperable environment that supports the digital investigator during the entire analysis process.
* Caine Interface, a user friendly GUI.
* Ubuntu-like easy installation on a forensic workstation.
* Semi-automated compilation of the final report.

We noticed that not only Debian-users like grml but also people coming from the BSD-section, Gentoo-Linux and so on. You don’t need any debian-knowledge to use grml, but if you would like to use the package management you should know some basics. The following table provides a comparison of the packagement of debian compared with some other well known package management systems:
Package management of *nix
Action Debian Gentoo RPM OpenBSD
( see chart at

http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=debian )
