What I'd like to see is a port of the open source program Virtualdub. If there was such an all in one application for Linux it would be an excellent thing. Any thoughts?

Something maybe similar from one of my other posts.........

I set up The Film Gimp with MandrakeClub to have the RPM's made for Mandrake 9.1 ---------- THEY DID IT !!!!! They sent me an email stating it was now ready for download.

I started the RPM voting on this at MandrakeClub. Glad to see it made it to the finished stage!. I think the CMYK thing will eventually be a problem of the past. That would make the gimp and the film gimp much more useable in the print world.

I installed it and it works great. Most everything looks just like the regular gimp. The main difference is going from 8 bit to 16 bit editing.

oh yeah......... filmgimp DID change it's name to cinepaint.

From another one of my posts:

Quote:
HomePage: http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/

Quote:
CinePaint is a free open source painting and image retouching program designed to work best with 35mm film and other high resolution high dynamic range images. It is the most popular open source tool in the motion picture industry -- used in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Scooby-Doo, Harry Potter, Stuart Little and other feature films. CinePaint is used for painting of background mattes and for frame-by-frame retouching of movies. CinePaint is available for Linux, Macintosh OS X, Windows, and other popular operating systems.

The 32-bit per channel color range of CinePaint appeals to 35mm cinematographers and professional still photographers because film scanners are capable of greater color bit-depth than can be displayed on an 8-bit per channel monitor or can be manipulated in typical programs. However, CinePaint is a general-purpose tool useful for working on images for motion pictures, print, and the Web. CinePaint supports many file formats, both conventional formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and TGA images -- and more exotic cinema formats such as Cineon and OpenEXR.

CinePaint is free software. The generosity and commitment of its developers, users and sponsors make CinePaint possible.
Killer CinePaint Features

* Typical GIMP/Photoshop Stuff
* Visible Brushes
* 8/16/32-bits of Color per Channel (up to 128-bits RGBA)
* Motion Picture File Formats: Kodak Cineon, ILM OpenEXR, Maya IFF, 32-bit TIFF
* Frame Manager
* Flipbook Player

Studio Users

CinePaint is known to be in use at these studios.

* Rhythm & Hues: Harry Potter, Cats & Dogs, Dr. Dolittle 2, Little Nicky, Grinch, Sixth Day, Stuart Little, and Planet of the Apes
* Sony Pictures Imageworks: Stuart Little II
* Hammerhead: Showtime, Blue Crush and 2 Fast, 2 Furious
* Flash Film Works: in production on Duplex (Danny Divito director)
* Computer Cafe: in production on an unnamed film (Sean Connery)

Hi crouse, thanks for the very quick and informative post. I will check out that program, thanks. Does it edit .AVI files though like Virtualdub does? I use Virtualdub on my Windowz box for video editing.

But does it manipulate .avi files and work with several different kinds of video and audio codecs?

Nope, it doesn't. It's a single image, single frame editor. Mostly used for background mattes and touch-ups. there's probably an app to do what you want, but I don't know of one.

maybe I've found one for you: avidemux- http://freshmeat.net/projects/avidemux/?topic_id=256

http://www.bunkus.org/dvdripping4linux/en/separate/tricks.html "If you've done video editing with Windows before you probably know the excellent OpenSource editor VirtualDub. An OpenSource utility for Linux that aims at providing the user with a similar set of features is avidemux. You can use it in order to easily cut specific parts from a movie, to apply filters, to reencode movies and to do a lot more. I suggest you take a look at it even if using the command line is as natural to you as it is for me."

Hey...... cool germ.... thanks.... I was shooting in the dark as I've never used virtualdub ....

yea, I use dvd::rip to rip and transcode to encode to .avi and just figured there must be a good editor.

Hi Germ, thank you very much for the excellent information and very quick reply! I'm loving these forums. I bookmarked the site you mentioned and will check the program out. If you've used virtualdub how does avidemux compare in your opinion? I did chat with a few Linux coders here and there about porting Virtualdub to Linux but they seemed very hostile and said that it would take a lot of time and effort and the code used to make vdub would make it even more difficult to port [time consuming], but maybe I just ran into the wrong coders to ask this of. heh. Thanks again!

heh...never used Virtualdub. I haven't used avidemux except by proxy. I use transcode to encode to .avi, but have only edited from within the dvd::rip app. I believe it uses avidemux as a plugin of sorts to do the editing.

Be sure and let us know how it goes.

Virtualdub is very nice, probably the best app around for Winderz boxes that handles .avi files. I've heard some people run Virtualdub under WINE or some other like program but I haven't tried it.

Thanks, I'll post here if I ever get around to using it... First I have to tackle d/l'ing mdk updates at 56k lol.
