The hard core few will retreat to Arch, Gentoo, and the like. Because it is a macho thing to do the harder ones, some NooB's will join the diminishing ranks.

I never perceived either as macho - I came across gentoo by complete accident and gave it a go and found the low level interaction to be hugely engaging and I attribute 99.9% of my far from comprehensive linux knowledge to using gentoo for 6~7 years; Arch is a recent discovery for me as advocated by crouse who (to my knowledge) has never backed that up with any claims of increased strength, virility, attraction to the opposite sex...I think the last time I used the term 'ardcore to describe myself, my tongue was planted firmly in cheek

I don't know if this ranks up there with finding a 4 leaf clover, but nice to meet you ... similarly, my dabble with arch is now at about 9 months(?) I think; my intention is to truly live with this distro to make sure it gets a fair look-in, but that's a 2-way street - if the distro doesn't engage me then it is hard for me to commit; so far I'm liking arch a lot though I still lean to the granularity of gentoo's approach[/Off-topic]

In answer to the original question, if kernel version is a must then you can run conky or gkrellm to display your version on *box or fvwm (or other wm) that don't have an 'about' panel/display

But in all honesty, why? We're using linux/*bsd - just pull up a terminal and punch in uname -a; not sure what version your DE/WM is? Use your GUI/CLI package manager to check for updates - the good ones let you know what you're running, if you have the latest, etc <-- that's not intended as a macho remark btw...[/On-topic]

[Off-topic...again]
I've responded to JP in a thread elsewhere that I don't see a need for him to go from (mainstream) kernel 2.6.24 to (not yet in repo) kernel 2.6.25 <-- definitely intended to demonstrate that I don't cull kodiak bears with my little toe before grabbing a yogi-steak for breakfast[/Off-topic...again]

Didn't see anybody else mention this one. Is there a reason for that?

I'm running superkaramba (just checked - it's latest looks like it's from 2024) which lists kernel version / KDE / QT version and architecture - I kinda like it just for watching cpu usage / swap usage / network access. Since I've usually got an empty desktop all this is just a <control>F3 (eg) away. There's one application (printer status software) on my sidux which will from time to time go wonky and start eating ram. If the system gets slow, I check swap usage. If it's at about 50%, something's wrong and it's time to fix it.

Had this for a long time - it may be outmoded now.... Question

regards,

rumbarg
