BSD Release: DragonFly BSD 2.6.1
DragonFly BSD Matthew Dillon has announced the release of DragonFly BSD 2.6.1, a BSD operating system originally forked from the FreeBSD 4.x code base: "The DragonFly 2.6 release is here! Three release options are now available for 32-bit: our bare-bones CD ISO image, a bare-bones bootable USB disk-key image (minimum 1G USB stick needed), and a GUI bootable USB disk-key image with a full X environment. The GUI USB image replaces the DVD ISO image we had in the previous release, to work around issues with DVDs simply being too slow to boot an X environment from. Two release options are available for 64-bit: our bare-bones CD ISO image and our bare-bones bootable USB disk-key image. The 64-bit release is now fully supported." Distribution Release: Dragora GNU/Linux 2.0
Dragora GNU/Linux Matias Fonzo has announced the release of Dragora GNU/Linux 2.0, a 100% "libre", general-purpose distribution built from scratch: I am pleased to announce the final version of Dragora GNU/Linux 2.0. Dragora is a powerful and reliable GNU/Linux distribution created from scratch with the intention of providing a stable, multi-platform and multi-purpose operating system. Highlights since RC2: the installer includes a better detection method for the CD-ROM, the option to install GRUB in a root partition is back again. The installation of the packages is slightly faster with clzip 1.0 and lzip 1.10. This release comes with Runit as default init scheme, Linux-libre kernel 2.6.32.11, OpenSSL 1.0.0, GCC 4.4.3, and more. Added cURL and Expat to complement Git." NEW • Distribution Release: CDlinux 0.9.6 standard 30MB, community 225MB, and console 30MB
CDlinux Ben Zhao has announced the release of CDlinux 0.9.6, a small live CD featuring the Xfce desktop, several popular desktop applications and a handful of administration tools: "CDlinux 0.9.6 released. This release is a major upgrade. Almost all components are upgraded to their latest stable versions, like Linux kernel 2.6.33.2, X.Org Server 1.8.0, Mesa 7.8.1. Thanks to the open source ATI and Intel drivers, we now have fairly good 2D/3D support on almost all ATI and Intel chip-based video cards. PAE is also enabled in this release. As a result, we can support up to 64 GB of RAM now. While the downside is that you can't run CDlinux 0.9.6 on older CPUs (5×86, K6, Pentium, etc.) any more, not even the Mini edition. ( Older versions available on left panel all links ) http://www.cdlinux.info/wiki/doku.html/
Package upgrades: GTK+ 2.18.9, Qt 4.6.2, JRE 6u19, Firefox 3.6.3, Midnight Commander 4.7.0.4...." See the release announcement http://www.cdlinux.info/wiki/doku.html/news/latest and release notes . http://cdlinux.info/releases/0.9.6/RELNOTES

Here with KNOPPIX 6.3, the Linux Magazine version from the April 2024 issue 113 of Linux Pro Magazine. It uses LXDE so it is lighter by far from the very bloated KNOPPIX 5.3.1 DVD from a few years ago. Still has the "Initiating Start Up Sequence" female voice to welcome you to KNOPPIX.

antiX, even though not all builds of it are truly small, still uses up less than half of a CD in BASE form, so I think it still qualifies as a mini distribution. Admittedly it is growing in size. It is not a DSL or a SliTAZ, or even a Puppy. It is as flexible or more flexible than any of them. It got a few good ideas from Puppy in terms of the persistence features, and anticapitalista checks out SliTAZ too, so if there is something to be gained there that can be applied to the BASE version, we could see it. In past releases, anticapitalista has not been too proud to get ideas from Absolute Linux, a Slackware based distribution, and before that, ideas came from sidux, and of course, originally from SimplyMEPIS, which gained early live technology from KNOPPIX and its stability from Debian Stable. I feel that anti gets most of the best and gets rid of the rest, so for those who like to build their own systems, this one, with antiX2USB and other tools, including remastersys, is great. With the former sidux metapackage installer and smxi scripts. you can very easily add additional development environments, applications, and window managers to antiX with just a few menu selections and it does not take long to do this at all.

You can also run antiX as either a Debian {Stable,Testing,Sid} distribution. By default, Testing is enabled. Stable and Sid are typically provided in the apt source file, comment out the ones you do not want and uncomment those that you do want, refresh and dist-upgrade and you are on your way. I do that with smxi and it manages any transitions VERY well.

I was one of the ones pushing the envelope very early in the game. I used smxi with Debian Sid before I used it with the real sidux. I used it with Debian Stable and SimplyMEPIS before Harold Hope (h2) even considered supporting that, and I was into it real early on with antiX too - enough so that h2 mentions my name, at least in the antiX implementation. I asked Harold about a few quirks in the program, and he pointed out that the quirks were really on the part of SimplyMEPIS, which modifies the standard way that Debian does things.

Anyway, when it comes to mini distributions, there is as much experimentation and adaptation going on in this space as there is in any other space except for the netbook, smartphone and cloud spaces, but distros like this one have a good level of overlap with those distributions, and antiX is in those games, at least some of them. I am using antiX this weekend and really enjoying it.

I installed Knoppix 6.2 sometime back when it came out. Took a while to get the root password set. Had problem with the install corrupting some libs. Got it fixed tonight. I agree, it is quite good.

6.3 is even nicer than 6.2 was, and I have to say that I like the KNOPPIX 6 series better than the 5 series for a Live DVD; the 5 series had simply gotten too large for the DVD to be of much use; it was too big and slow; much better now.

If installed, however, KNOPPIX is just a Sid based distribution, so if you have 6.2 actually installed, no need to run out and get 6.3 except to run live.

NEW • Distribution Release: Macpup Opera 2.0
Macpup Johnny Lee has announced the release of Macpup Opera 2.0, a small Puppy-based Linux distribution featuring the latest Enlightenment 17 window manager and the Opera web browser: "Macpup Opera 2.0 is based on Puppy Linux 4.3.1 (Linux kernel 2.6.30.5). It has all the applications from 4.3.1 plus Opera 10.10 and GIMP 2.6.3. It also Has dBUS 1.2.16. The Enlightenment E17 window manager version .061 was also compiled and installed from source. You can also use JWM, use the exit menu to change window managers. Please note that not all the options in the E17 system shut-down menu work with Puppy Linux, that is why the exit menu was added. The battery module in this build of E17 had a problem of maxing out the CPU, so I removed it. I have added a script to check battery status, just click on the battery icon if you are using a laptop. The included E17 themes are customized for Macpup." Read the full release announcement for further details. http://hardkap.net/forums/topic/macpup-opera-20#post-1632

MacPup sounds quite interesting. I am here now with a lightweight side of antiX, running in an IceWM setup using Iceape, the Debian branded implementation of Seamonkey, the community developed version of the classic Netscape/Mozilla Internet Suite, still sponsored and available from Mozilla download sources. The Debian version of this browser is fine and with the nicely tuned antiX infrastructure around it, this is a nice fast system for browsing and Email use, and it is quite flexible and extensible to set up for other things as well - either small and lightweight or full featured, heavy laden desktop environments as well. The lightness of the default setup is excellent, but so is the flexibility to make what you want from it, and there are lots of useful tools to assist you along the way.
