Ok, folks, here is a new website that I started a few days ago. You will see a few familiar faces there already.

The long and short of it.......

the domain name linuxtorrents.org became available again...... the former linuxtorrents.org joined with several other sites to become linuxtracker.org

why did i start another site ?

A couple reasons, number one, if something happened to linuxtracker.org .... no torrents. number two ....... well, because I could. Wink

number three, this is a way for everyone to GIVE back something to Linux. This costs you nothing to run, and it helps spread Linux to the masses......... not to mention each other. I know that many distributions have excellent download sites.......but bandwidth costs. When it's "distributed" among many clients, it's free, and just as fast if not faster.

This site is JUST starting, might be a few hiccups along the way, but mostly we just need help with seeding and uploading. Those of you that want upload privilege to upload torrents, let me know here and we can get that setup. I'd like those of you that have a favorite distro ...... upload the torrent file and seed for that distro. This has to be a community effort in order to work........ and we are starting here at usalug.org. If you have questions, ask them here.

Alright I was building them and they were working the other night during testing, but now it says my torrents are corrupt.

Actually I'm having this problem with others too, like jbsnake's dsl torrent.

EDIT: Looks like I don't have one in sidux, any recommendations for an easy to configure one that works well on a Debian deriv?

I'll look on my Arch box next .

EDIT: nothing on the Arch box either, that I can find .... nothing ending in *torrent. With all the apps that KDE has, I'm surprised they don't have ktorrent Confused

I would think ktorrent would available. Another popular client is azereus.

Are you guys using CreateTorrent, BitTorrent, or something else to create your torrent files for the site? I have not created torrent files in the past, so I am certainly open to suggestions for the best tool to use. I understand that CreateClient can be built pretty easily, but the example I found used the classic source building method: download, unzip and untar the result, then ./configure && make && sudo make install.

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Well, That was interesting .... I decided to go with ktorrent I started the Arch box on installing ktorrent, then I started the sidux box on the installation, On Arch, it's an older version than the one on sidux; Arch - ktorrent-2.2.5-1-i686 3.6M sidux - ktorrent 2.2.6.dfsg.1-1 7758kB . Even though sidux was started last, it finished just about 1 second before Arch (yes, I was watching very closely, because they were both so close). Arch has sidux beat hands down for upgrades/dist upgrades, but sidux seems to install faster. Still, now with two boxes, I feel like I've got the best of both worlds Wink

I'll see if I can get them set up in the next few days .....

I simply use Azureus as the client.

If I want to CREATE a torrent with Azureus, I go to the top left corner of the client.

File>NewTorrent

Browse to the iso I want the torrent for, and save my torrent file to the desktop.
Then login to LinuxTorrents.org and upload the torrent.
You will then be asked to DOWNLOAD the torrent .... (it now has more information in it) and just open it with Azureus again..... if you have your settings correct, it will know you already have the iso, and just check it, then start seeding it after it's done checking (IE: it won't download it again).

IMPORTANT:

in the Azureus client....... check the location of your default directory.
Tools > Options > Files > Default Directory

If your iso's are not stored in the Default Directory listed, it won't allow you to upload them Wink

Also, you must configure a port on your router to accept traffic ....... that setting is adjustable in the client as well.

Sounds way more complicated than it really is........ Wink

Once you do this once or twice, it's a piece of cake Very Happy

If you use deluge... like myself... you can get the "New Torrent" option by opening "Preferences" then choosing "Plugins" and choose the "Torrent Creator" box... took me a bit to figure it out.. but the rest is the same (roughly) as with Azureus for creating torrents.

Thanks guys, I will have to create a few torrents and start contributing to the mix. Looks like you guys entered most of the ones that I would have initially created, so perhaps I will have to seed a few of them instead.

Definitely want to participate. I had recently tried out the Linux Tracker, but if we are going to do our own, so much the better!

I use transmission btw, and its real nice and lean if your looking for something simple, works, and has the option to run in daemon mode Razz

i know its in the arch repo's, not sure about other distros though Razz
