GPU-Performance
Some of the changes mentioned below are said to increase the temperature of your GPU. In any case, monitor your graphic card to make sure it isn't getting too hot!
Primer
Several popular graphics cards out there - especiall NVIDIA ones - exhibit performance problems with KDE4. These performance hits mostly concern Plasma - the KDE4 desktop - and KWin - the KDE window-manager. Generally speaking this isn't due to KDE4 being unoptimized but a problem with the cards' graphics drivers. This page encompasses certain problems that might arise and how to get rid of them.

hmm - blame the gfx drivers, not the kde code? how objective is this guy?
anyone remember the enlightenment team or the compiz team complaining about gfx driver code?
he needs to post up some more evidence that the kde code is innocent and the nvidia drivers are to blame

erm, they are saved on my arch and gentoo installations...

Unfortunately the reasons for plasma being choppy seem to be numerous so it's hard to tell where your choppiness comes from. |
but we know it's not the kde code, it's definitely the gfx drivers...
if that's an official kde-sponsored site, I'd expect better of them in terms of content, information, and general responsibility

I detect a game of "pass the blame"....
techbase.kde.org is a wiki, so this user may be a developer for KDe or he may not be. But it is almost certain that the page is not "official" KDE released.

I tried the KDE.org forum out with a search for 'overheating graphics' and got no matches. Similarly got nothing significant from a google search for that and kde 4.1.
Not going to worry about it yet - I'm not really an early adopter. Motto: avoid 'bleeding edge taxes'.

| I am more conservative at the moment. On my stable box running now simple openSUSE with KDE 3.5 and I will not touch KDE 4.x before I see it is working well. |

Pure FUD...just not sure of the motivation.
However, I do not like KDE 4. It's like they changed things just for the sake of change which is always a bad idea. I'll be sticking with the 3.5.x series as long as possible.

| Rolling release Archlinux move from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.1. Well my testbox was gone after the update. No KDE anymore, no KDM anymore, so I switched for Gnome GDM and removed the KDE 4.1 and all KDE 3.x 4.x files in my System. Now I am going to make a clean KDE 4.1 Install. If this doesn't work ........... I format the box and again a clean new Install. It's my testbox, so how care ......... ! |

At least right now, you don't HAVE to run KDE 4.1. When I use KDE on most of my systems, I use KDE 3.5.9, which is feature rich and very stable. I use it for running apps like k3b, kaffeine, konversation, kmail, and konqueror. When I don't need any of them, I run XFCE. When I want something even faster I run antiX with either Fluxbox or IceWM - especially if all I want to do is quickly check Email, then shut off the system (which is something that I do with the Lenovo laptop fairly often). Even though the Lenovo is fast - and KDE is nearly as fast as XFCE on that box, it sure is nice to be able to check, then clean out over 100 Bulk messages, check my Inbox for anything important, then logoff, shutdown, and head out to whatever I have planned. |

Code freeze, huh? Been about ten years since I was in that space!
Looking forward to seeing improved stability and features in this release, and hopefully full features in the next release. I found Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4 Remix to be reasonably usable for routine every day tasks, but the only way I got navigational features to an acceptable level was to add one or two desktop icons and a taskbar applet that mimics KDE 3.5.9 features. I do not like the wide, GNOME-like task bar in the new KDE. I find it slows me down big time.
But other than that, it seems to work fine. |
