What happened?

I guess you would have to ask Patrick Verner.

But I suspect we have a problem only someone like an independent like him can hope to address.

The hardware side, not to mention kernel and other software, is moving forward at a rate few outside the inner circles are even aware of. I was just reading an article about the status of SSD's and new optical devices.

I will not try to second guess why he put out a new version so soon. I do wish that it would slow a bit, I am running out of disks <G><
Of course it could be as simple as a minor goof up ...or not

Thanks for the reply.

With all the distros you play with, I'd think you would be using use rewritable disks. I use 8CM DVD-RW a lot: their 1.4 Gigs storage can hold the contents of a standard CD and they are small 8 Centimeter discs which spin-up faster than full sized discs. Sony part number DMW30L2 (2x speed, possibly discontinued) and similar. I just bought a 4 pack of Maxell 8CM DVD-RW (2x speed, no part number known) for $7 on closeout at my local WalMart.

I use a multitude different media for different anticipated long term use. I have some of those mini RW disks, some full size RW disks. Generally the time and handling trumps other considerations. In the past I bought CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW by the hundreds through an outlet. Ran into a couple of burners that would only burn + RW at one point, and have some of those. The handling and storage of mini RW disks make them the last choice only for very volatile fast changing cases...such as system Rescue or such that changes frequently.

As the prices have about doubled since my last purchase, I may have to re-evaluate when present expendable media get low. <G><

When the club was active, I passed out disks of NooB Linux, and various Utilities or applications. Not much of that the last year or so.

I would think an ISO image server (just save ISOs to the server, no media other than the server hard-disk) on TFTP might be a cheaper alternative - I saw a how to for that once... will dig around and update this post if I find it

This tutorial shows how to set up a PXE (short for preboot execution environment) install server with Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). A PXE install server allows your client computers to boot and install a Linux distribution over the network, without the need of burning Linux iso images onto a CD/DVD, boot floppy images, etc. This is handy if your client computers don't have CD or floppy drives, or if you want to set up multiple computers at the same time (e.g. in a large enterprise), or simply because you want to save the money for the CDs/DVDs. In this article I show how to configure a PXE server that allows you to boot multiple distributions: Ubuntu Edgy/Dapper, Debian Etch/Sarge, Fedora Core 6, CentOS 4.4, OpenSuSE 10.2, and Mandriva 2024.

I have done many virtual installations using an external USB drive and Virtualbox OSE. In the past I have also installed or upgraded directly from ISO images.
