well, the monitor i'm using is an old crt which can't display over 1024x768.... i just tried another (newer), but it didn't fix the problem.
so, with your theory of the unsupported graphics card, i tried two different cards (separately)
nothing has fixed it yet
besides... don't think it to be a driver issue..... it worked before i ran updates, and it loads far enough to change resolution to desktop resolution and display the mouse
another possibility... could kvm have anything to do with it?
while loading, the splash bootscreen switches to text, and it shows after a about a minute of text 'loading kvm module [fail]'
Thank You for your input

week and a half later.... still not resolved..
anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
(probably in one of the updates, but i'm not sure what updates were installed that may have caused this. i've ran updates since then (over ssh (sudo aptitude upgrade)), but still have the same issue)

Download a live CD distro, such as Knoppix or even the Ubuntu live CD, and see if X comes up without issues.
if it does you have a problem with your install
if it doesn't... well you are TAR'd and FSCK'd*
*: Sorry, Linux humor....

well, it worked fine until the updates, so a live cd would work fine since they don't include those updates
this happened before, and i re-installed the server. it worked, but again, when i installed updates, it did what it's doing now

I went to the server to see if there was anything wrong, and the screen was black, with the mouse |
And really, if there are (EE) and (II) and (WW) in the current logfile, that is the problem I would start with.
ATI recently removed support for older cards. That means what worked with ATI stuff before was probably using an older driver but the new updated graphics driver has nothing to work with. Try to roll back the driver, see if the older driver works. Synaptic should be able to do this, but I'm too new to Ubuntu 9.04 (I'm 9+ years on Linux, just new to Ubuntu).
Next, there once was a time when X read config files in a sequence, from multiple locations. That way, if you wrecked one config file, you just renamed it and X COULD fall back to a different fole that you hadn't edited. I don't hear this method being used too often today. Ah, yes, still active in my PCLinuxOS system: man 5 xorg.conf shows the sequence. That may help if you elect to rename the config file in one location to see if a different location has a working copy.
Otherwise, if I'm wrong, we will need more information.
Sorry, we can't fix things without more knowledge.

i'm not sure if it would be the drivers for the video card:
does the same if you put a different card in, and
display works fine, but the os quits loading the login page
don't know where it quits, but it gets far enough to show the mouse (which functions fine, but isn't much good since the rest of the screen is blank)
might there be a log for when that loads?
also, is there a way to roll back updates to 'like new' ... install the older updates that ship with the distro?

can you login to CLI? do you use gnome?
if so then try this:
delete or rename the following folders and try logging in again.
~/.gnome ~/.gnome2 ~/.gconf

the computer quits loading before it can log in... so i don't see how removing login-related folders would help
i tried it anyway, just to check, but it didn't change anything

Please could you post the following:
1. /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. output of dmesg following one of these 'incidents'
3. output of lsmod
4. output of lspci
5. the Xorg log file (normally /var/log/Xorg.0.log or similar).
6. The hardware specifications.
in code tags. It's still not clear from your description exactly where it's failing (e.g. is it when it first starts X, is it when you log in, is it before that etc)

I still not sure what Hardware you are using?
what is your configuration of your computer Hardware?
Processor CPU?
Graphic GPU?
Mouse?
Keyboard?
Monitor?
System Name (DELL xxx, HP xxx, or Motherboard MSI, Gigabite, .....?
after we know what Hardware you use post also the
Code: | # /var/log/Xorg.0.log |
if you have trouble with the command line then use MC.
now you can log in in the init3 mode
command
you will get now are Interface hw looks like the old Norton Commander. Easy to navigate and easy to use.
If you are using a older ATI card we need to replace your fglrx driver with the ati driver with xf86-video-ati.
but first I need to know your config |
