Word Web is an excellent Windows app that provides dictionary and thesaurus functions for a large number of text-based programs in Windows. It is also standalone. I have used the free version for more than five years. The thesaurus is of maximum utility, in that I rarely need to know definitions, but often need to substitute different words - small words when I am writing for my grand daugther, larger ones for her mother, and specialised ones for her new stepfather. I have been searching for an equivalent for Linux for close to a year, now, without success. I have found a lot of stuff, but the only ones I can find are spelling dictionaries that do not contain definitions, or are online only. Has anyone here heard of such an app? (It is a part of the barrier to total M$ elimination for me, but not so much to prevent it, if I can find solutions to other problems, like a decent image catalog program that works - like ACDSee.)

The link for "pornview" was kind of strange - a sourceforge page like they were saying: 'We have a project" - and nothing else - I'll have to check back on that one! Thanks for the ACDsee link! I like ACDSee, I've used it on Winders once or twice. I did try Compupic, but for some reason I can't get it to install since I last reinstalled Knoppix/Debian. I will check out imagseek, though! I did try Wordnet, and it works OK on Windows, but gives it's info in the ways that linguistic researchers want it, so I don't half know how to look things up... I didn't know that it would work on Linux, though, (I used it on Windows for a few weeks - I think I had been looking for a translation program at the time.) I did download the Linux tarball, so I will check it out as soon as I get some chow down.

Maybe this one would help you?

Nah, but thanks - I need something that I can use while I'm using a word processor, like O.O.O, which would be in the gui...It doesn't matter, I guess. While I was trying to check out ImageMagic, I came to the conclusion that there is something wrong with my system - apt-get is not finding and setting up any dependencies... I don't know how to describe it any better, but I need to try another distro, anyway, so I'll hold off on setting too much up in this one...

Bottom of every post is a search text field for Dictionary.com It gives definitions. Right next to the quick reply box !! Even more reason for you to be on usalug.org all the time
But I will be watching the thread for other suggestions, as this does really interest me |
I use dictionary.com all the time - it is the only way I have to get definitions in Linux (I could bookmark other dictionaries, I suppose, but dictionary.com works, and does most of what I want.) Wordnet works - I used it on Windows - but, (hmm, this post is a good example, I need a word to describe the group that Wordnet is designed for. I used "linguist" earlier, but that is not the correct word, the word I need is for a group of people who study the English language in detail. ) I'm looking for a program that will give me a large number of synonyms, which Wordnet does, but it categorises them in a way that is hard for me to search. Ah well, I will try to set up Wordnet as soon as I install another distro...
It's cool that dictionary.com is linked to here. I never noticed it down there, although I'm sure I saw it, just never paid attention...
You know what would be cool? Dictionary.com (there is a way to do a thesaurus search there, BTW) capabilities are very close to what I'm looking for. If it was a program that I could access when I'm not online, it would be exactly what I'm looking for. (It would also be nice to have such a program to allow you to add words to the dictionary and/or thesaurus. A definiton search would be excellent, but not bloody likely.)
