Right, I need to find an email client that will connect to our Exchange 5.5 server and give me the same level of functionality as Outlook 2024 which we currently use. It must also allow me to access shared calendars as well.

Unfortunatley the exchange connector only works with Exchange 2024 and 2024 not 5.5

Your email needs might be resolved by using a webmail interface to Exchange 5.5 (a prior employer set it up for me on E5.5, it was browser based which I hope means it is OS independent), but if you prefer to also interface with the calendar functions using the same tool, that might halt the webmail solution.
Is this link something like what you seek? http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpxj/

I've always wondered about exchange - does it run standalone, or do you install it onto a server already running Windows?
Some things I've read about it go either way - so what's the score?

Nukes: Exchange runs on top of Windows - 5.5 is most likely to be running on an NT4 platform. We almost installed exchange here once, but I honestly think learning all about sendmail would be an order of magnitude less painful.

Exchange is more than a mail server though - it's a whole groupware platform. From what I hear its a similar sort of thing to lotus notes. (are they ever going to port that to Linux?)

If it was just email access then it wouldn't be a problem as I could configure OWA (OWA for those who don't know is Outlook Web Access, which is a web based front end for Exchange) but it doesn't provide all the functionality that I need and can be a bit tempremental as well.

Actually I have found Exchange fairly straight forward but I can't say anything bout sendmail as I have never used it.

Sendmail is horrible. It's just a mail server as well, not groupware.
It doesn't look as though you're going to find a solution here. If I'm correct from what I've read, exchange 5.5 only supports it's proprietary (undocumented) protocol so plans for evolution support seem to have been dropped and even if they were in progress chances are it would never be complete.

I haven't tried but I sort of doubt it.
