Ive got a Terratec Aureon Sky 5.1 PCI soundcard and im running Mandrake 10... Shows up as:
.......................................................
Vendor: ‎IC Ensemble Inc

Bus: ‎PCI

Bus identification: ‎1412:1724:153b:1147

Location on the bus: ‎1:8:0

Description: ‎ICE1724 [Envy24HT]

Module: ‎snd-ice1724

Media class: ‎MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO
........................................................

It can support very high frequency playback (24 bit + upto 192khz).

Also ive heard a lot about ALSA... But dont actually know much about it... Essentially i just wondered where i might find the best driver and how to play around with audio settings...

Oh another thing does XMMS downmix to 16bit?

Am i right in saying all common audio codecs work in 16bit? eg MP3, Ogg, Flac ??? and CDs are 20bit audio ?

Audio CODEC '97 (AC97) is 20 bit.

PCM audio (pulse code modulation) is usually 16 bit, but can be 8 bit and I have heard of 18 bit.

As far as CD, I believe it's 44,000 Hz @16 bit stereo.

And that's about all I can tell you. Never was into the technical side of audio. I just listen. Wink

You're already using alsa for your driver. It mainly offers a couple of improvements over the old OSS (multiple devices could access the dsp at the same time without errors) and a better mixer style.
Most of the settings can be tweaked using alsactl. Do "man alsactl" for more info.

actually, alsamixer is the one to tweak the settings. alsactl offers a very few advanced options. It's mostly used to keep the alsamixer settings with the "alsactl store" command after you have ran alsamixer. Wink
