|
|
I was trying to install google bar to Mozilla logged in as a regular user and it did not let me. The error was something like "Permission denied". I then logged in as root and installed it selecting all user when prompted.
It works just fine when I am logged as root, but when I try to start mozilla from a different user it hangs for a few seconds as if it were trying to open it but it does not open it. It does not display any error either though.
I really like Mozilla, please help.
Thanks

Howdy!
First off, welcome to the lug!
Ultimately, this may be a permissions problem, but lets cover some details before I assume too much.
Next, when you launch Mozilla or any other program, you can get error messages in clear text: launch Mozilla from the command line... as in Code: | mmmna@Solomon:~$ mozilla & |
Open a terminal or console window (essentially the same thing, different statements), type the mozilla ampersand, press return and see what messages come up. You should be able to copy and paste these errors in a forum message window, for us to look at.
BTW: Is this a Phoenix toolbar? If yes, I'll assume you made certain that it claimed to work, and also claimed to work for your browser version. Even then.... things can still not work because the code may not be ready for 'prime time', but I could not find the toolbar for Google at MozDev.
EDIT: Wouldn't you know it... click submit, enter a few more searches over at mozdev, and ... guess what I found! http://googlebar.mozdev.org/ :-\
/EDIT

Hi, and thanks for you help,
I typed Mozilla & in shell and I got the following response:
There was no error only something like: [990]
I would imagine is some kind of id given to the process I am not sure.
Then a window asking me to chose my profile popped up and I picked my profile (which I had created before I installed the google bar), and nothing happed after. No error message or nothing.
The wired part is that logged in as user I can open Mozilla and the google bar actually works.

Yes...... I would say mozilla is only able to run as root because when he updated it in root..... all permissions were granted to root only. Probably will have to manually give permission to mozilla to run under another user.
Another way (i think) would be to go to the mozilla executable as root and update the ownership of it from root/root to user/user and it should work that way also.

Yes, that would work here, I think. I wonder if there is an option at installation time, to install Mozilla in a way that allow users to add plugins and whatnot.

How would you manually give permission to mozilla to run under another user?
Or what file should I update the ownership from root/root to user/user? Using Chmod?
I am not experienced with the commands at all
