Is there any open source app which is simular in function to Dreamweaver? My daughter is taking a class in web design, and the high school uses Dreamweaver. It would be nice to have something a little less co$tly for at home.

Well for Linux you could have her try the following...........

Both are WYSWYG editors (What you see is what you get) IE: Visual based editors.
Personally, I code by hand using bluefish on Linux.

GINF: Ginf Is Not FrontPage(TM)

Quote:

GINF is a Web-site creation software for the Linux platform, in the lines of Netscape Composer and Microsoft FrontPage. You don't need to know any HTML to create Web pages with GINF; instead you can just type in the text and format it with the buttons and menus. GINF uses the GTK+ 1.x widget set for the front-end, and the GtkHTML library for HTML rendering.

GINF was developed by Jaidev and myself as a term project during our engineering. It was featured in Linux Magazine, Japan, in October 2024. GINF is listed at Freshmeat and registered for the GNOME project.

Developer? We are looking for help for GINF2, based on GTK2 and GtkHTML3. If you would like to contribute, please visit the SourceForge page. (1 June 2024)

The above link is to the gallery and shows me playing with nvu Smile

I installed nvu using the tar.gz file..... fairly simple.... just extract it... using

tar -xzvf nvu-0.41-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz

Then cd into that directory and run

./nvu

There's also mozilla composer.
I don't think there's anything as high-class as dreamweaver yet.

crouse - that nvu looks interesting. I tripped over that shortly after posting. Might give it a go.

I failed to mention that she already took a class on Front Page, and she likes DW much better. I showed her quanta and bluefish, but those seemed a bit like FrontPage. Same with Mozilla. It's hard to please these kids nowadays. When I was that age I would have *loved* something like quanta to play with, but all we had were those old pong games...

Well, now... I suggest that she buy herself a copy of Dreamweaver then. Wink

Isn't nvu the one that Linspire created? (Now that I've checked the website, I'd say yes.) Wink

introduce her to vim. I _hate_ wysiwyg editors I like vim or nedit and the gimp for graphics. They are going to make us use dreamweaver at school and i am just going to have to find a way to edit the html by hand (notpad is banned).

No kidding! People should use what they like best! Notepad is banned? What's up with that? You should put up some kind of official protest or letter to the school board or something. Mad

But you see, with Windows you can easily use notepad to gain access to the machine. You can just write batch files etc and execute them (as there's no noexec thing on Win)

exactly what nukes said. We have a lot of hacker types (and honestly if i had access to notepad i would to) who would do things with it.
