I'm trying to educate myself as I'm tired of sitting in front of my computer stunned and helpless every time something goes amiss. My problem; I now have the basics of VIM after doing a number of tutorials and if needed could find more complex commands and etc. All well and good , but, I'm missing a factor; i.e. After a crash or other calamity, where and how do I locate and recognize the problem, and how will I know what repairs to make with my new found tool? Please, what am I missing? Confused

I always check the various logs in /var/log/. Mainly /var/log/messages. There are quite a few log files, some needing root access. This might help explain logging a little better.
