I bought a copy of Warcraft III on the weekend.

At certain places, it gives me the Windows XP equivalent to BSOD. So I upgrade my drivers, and get SP2. Now Windows boots into a black screen only, but before it did that (it booted into the desktop a couple of times, Warcraft -- or should I say ATI -- still completely hosed the system).

So.. I broke down and bought a Transgaming subscription, and this time it worked.

Now I enjoy crash-free Warcraft gaming goodness. Thank you, WineX!

Only one problem. I'm running it on SuSE Linux 9.1, and I'm guessing that it needs OSS, where SuSE 9.1 only gives me ALSA.
I thought of opening a Konsole and doing a modprobe snd-alsa-oss (is that it?) for OSS emulation, but otherwise I see nothing anywhere in SuSE that would allow for OSS emulation.

Any ideas?

That is my feeling about gaming also. I have tried Wine and had so-so results. I have a dedicated "gaming" machine and all of the rest are various flavors of Linux.

Not a problem anymore. After I shut down my PC for the night, and fired it up again everything works perfectly. It takes about 20 seconds to load initially, but it doesn't crash at all, versus horrible, horrible crash death reinstall-Windows-for-my-wife type of crash.

If my wife didn't like Windows better, I would never load it on this computer again.

I have been really suprised by winex/cedega just about every game I have tried to run with has worked flawlessly or with a few tiny problems. I have run warcraft III, tribes, the sims, jedi academy, and even zoo tycoon just fine. The transgaming people have put together a great piece of software.

Well, WC3 loads up a lot slower, and scrolling in-game are a bit choppier than what I remember on Windows, but, hey, at least it doesn't crash. Very Happy
I consider the $15 well-spent.
