It should be easy for you to use: `yum install gcc`. I am not sure if RH9 has Yum though. I'd suggest upgrading to Fedora Core.
Also you can use apt-rpm. But yeah, the problem was you didn't have gcc. g++ (development tools) installed.. should be on your cd's. Also, make sure to run configure again and see that it recognizes your g++, gcc installation.
