ok its caused by my having an old glibc version, I emerged a new one, but the program still says that it is 2.1 (its 2.3) and doom3 needs at least 2.2. HOw do I verify whether i have a good version or not? also it says there might be an issue with that and you should just use USE="nptl" emerge glibc but when I do that i get this:
USE="nptl" emerge glibc
Calculating dependencies ...done!

!!! Error: the sys-kernel/linux-headers package conflicts with another package.
!!! both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!! Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

I shall attempt to emerge the demo (its in portage, portage is amazing) and have that neutralize all my issues

Make sure you have the line:
Code:
localhost 127.0.0.1

in your /etc/hosts file.

That's from the error.

To determine what's blocking you emerging the 2.4 headers use "emerge -p"
Be warned - if you upgrade to a broken glibc version, or compile it with too aggressive flags, you will effectively kill your system. I'd advise using a stable gcc version (I mean going back to 3.4 or something) as well, as the 4 series still isn't up to much. (which is understandable, but fun to play with)
My hint is to check your profile options. Presumably you installed that kernel you're using through portage? It should have updated it.
Finally, get the proper version of Doom 3. Eliminate that as a cause of the problem.
