whenever I play music in xmms it starts to skip as if a cd would skip, although I'm playing the files from my hard drive. Anyone can help me???

does it do the same if you play it using another audio player? What scheduler are you using in the kernel? (if you don't know, just tell me what patchset you're running - i.e. ck, love, ac, nitro, vanilla etc)

SuSE 2.6.5 uses the O(1) scheduler with ck patch.

sasha, silly question...is DMA enabled for your HDD?

also, use the arts output plugin in xmms.

Germ, Switching to arts plugin didn't help. Silly question, what's DMA???

BTW, real player doesn't seem to have a problem with my sound card Sad
EDIT: Nevermind... it just started to do the same thing Sad

DMA is direct memory access. When you enable DMA, your hard drive directly reads/writes to memory rather than going through the cpu. It can really speed up access times.

To see if DMA is enabled, use this command as root replacing hda with your HDD if necessary:
Code:
hdparm /dev/hda

Here's mine:
Code:
[root@grendel germ]# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  3 (32-bit w/sync)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 65535/16/63, sectors = 80293248, start = 0
[root@grendel germ]#

Nukes wrote a very nice tutorial on using hdparm. Check it out. Wink

OK, you have DMA enabled. What are you trying to play...oggs?

Have you tried the alsa output plugin?

I'm mostly playing mp3s and oggs. The alsa player seems to like my sound card more and skips a lot less, but it's not as comfortable. I think I tried the alsa plugin (I tried the all) and no luck with xmms.
