I am a Sys Admin and have all windows servers. Is there anyway to use the Server Tools (mainly AD Users and Computers) on a Linux box? I know that this is pretty crazy but perhaps I would switch my production laptop to the penguin then. Confused

I'm in the same situation as you and to be honest I'd suggest that you dual boot your laptop whilst you have a look at whats available. The other thing I'd do is make a list of the apps that you use with windows and look for linux alternatives. The last and most important thing I'd do is ask plenty of questions here. Very Happy

Another thing you could do if you were looking to use Linux, but still wanted to be able to make changes to your M$ servers, is to use the linux RDC client and enable RDC on the servers.

CBSUPERDUTY: Not directly, but there's always rdesktop ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/rdesktop/ ). Acts just like the Remote Desktop tool in Windows, so you can just rdesktop to your server, and run the tools from there. It works, I've used it (and honestly think it was FASTER than the Windows client).

Thanks for the responses. I may give rdesktop a try but on another box first. Actually this is about the only thing that I can think of besides VPN (third party software. Nortel Contivity) that wouldn't work. Anybody know of an email client that can do HTTP over RPC to an Exchange box?

Don't know for sure about the mechanism, but Evolution has an Exchange Connector that's been open sourced recently by Novell.

Why do you want to HTTP over RPC? Depending on the version of Exchange you have you can use Evolution along with its Exchange connector. The other alternative would be to try and use Outlook Web Access (OWA) which should work fine through any browser.

HTTP over RPC allows me to connect to exchange using Outlook and no VPN while working remotely. Thanks for all of the replies.

http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/contivity/multi_os/
Don't know about licensing issues, etc., but from THAT page it would appear that Nortel has a Linux client for their VPN systems.

I'd be careful with the Nortel software. It can be pig to get to run right.

I have no experience with it - that was just a quick google hit. In the process I also saw several mentions of using FreeS/WAN to connect to a Nortel Contivity - that MAY be a better solution (but I don't know how practical it would be for him). Dug a bit more - FreeS/WAN can be used to act as a "branch office tunnel", so I don't know if it would be useful for a single lappy.

That would be a very wise move if you can make it.
No one can get a key-logger on to a linux box with out your cooperation.
