Is it cheaper to brew or just run to the store?

With some of the cheesy beers that are out there, it's cheaper to go to the store, but if you handcraft something yourself, that has a good flavor and color, you feel a sense of satisfaction, and especially if others compliment you on it's quality and flavor. What could be better than that Here in Montana, a kit is about $60 which will make about 5 cases of beer. That's only $12 per case, but there's all the time you spend 'cooking' and babying and keeping the temperatures just right, etc. But is it worth it? Definitely And then, after the first brew, you have all the equipment, so you only need buy the ingredients, now the cost has dropped tremendously, and you still have the same great beer! Or, you can try other recipes and do something different each time you brew.... just think, if you get good enuff, you can become a brewmaster at a micro-brewery just like Brewer13210. But, you would have to ask him about that , I'm just brewing for myself, I don't share too well when it comes to beer .

Depends on what you normally drink, and how much you like to brew. Brewing is a lot like cooking, where sometimes you don't mind putting that sauce from a jar over your pasta, but nothing beats homemade.
So, if you're happy with a can of Pabst, and think boiling water is a chore, brewing isn't for you. Otherwise, it's a great way to learn chemestry, physics, biology, flavor analysis, history, etc., etc.
For anyone interested, one of the best places to start is with the (now classic) All New Complete Joy of Home Brewing by Charlie Papazian:

During fermentation, yeast will produce a wide variety of alcohols, ethanol being the primary component, usually referred to as "grain alcohol". Additionally, longer chain fusel alcohols and a small amount of methanol is also produced. Generally, the higher the temperature of fermentation, that more fusel alcohols and methanol is produced.
Normally, in beer or wine, the proportion of these alcohols is very low compared to the ethanol, so there is nothing to worry about other than the fact that fusel alcohols can cause a serious hangover.
Obviously, during distillation, the alcohols, including the fusels and methanol, get concentrated, and normally the levels are still low enough that the greatest health danger is still mainly from DWI and getting the worst hangover you’ve ever had in your life. Can things go wrong to the point that the distilled alcohol is poisonous? It’s very unlikely, but it can happen.
The real danger is when someone hands you a homebrewed liquor where you have no idea of it’s original origins. You don’t know what it’s been adulterated with, or if it can from the private stash of a professional distiller or some high school kids chemistry experiment. There are smarter decision you can make that taking a gulp of that.

Note the "which we then distilled" in the post in question.
