Can anyone tell me what might be the best app to play DVDs? I would like something which is user friendly and easy to configure, as my non-Linux family may need to learn how to use it, since the windoze one has finally gone TU Smile. TIA, JP

Mepis 3.3 and dvd playback

Open synaptic and install

libdvdcss
libdvdcss2-dev
totem
totem-xine

--------------

Totem should work just by default now........

else......

check this out as well.....

How many optical drives (CD and/or DVD drives) do you have on your system. My guess is that you have a CDROM or CDRW on secondary master (ide 1:0) and a DVDROM on secondary slave (ide 1:1). If I'm right then it's because /dev/dvd is pointing to /dev/cdrom. If your setup is like what I said above then it should point to /dev/cdrom1.

As root in a shell type..
ls -l /dev/dvd
and this will show you what /dev/dvd is pointing to.
now type
ln -sf /dev/cdrom1 /dev/dvd
that will change it to point to cdrom1 drive
now type (again)
ls -l /dev/dvd
to make sure it changed..

the cdrom drive you should point to should match the name of the drive on your desktop you click when opening a CD in that same drive Wink

Totem works fine for Mepis 3.3 Wink

THX, I'll try totem first, and if that won't load on my Libranet box, I'll try mplayer.

crouse, I'd like to use Mepis 3.3, but it has issues with my boxes. SimplyMepis 2024 works fine, but it's on a different box that doesn't have a DVD writer/player. Very Happy

I appreciate the input, THX Exclamation Very Happy Very Happy

I would suggest Xine as well. I personally use mplayer but Xine is a really nice DVD Player.

I'm a big fan of kaffeine, which is just another GUI for xine like totem. It fits in well with my KDE desktop and works perfectly.

Thanks Crouse, just installed totem and watched Bourne Supremacy. Worked great. I always have problems figuring which extra libraries I need to install to watch DVD's, play WMA's etc...

Code:
root@libranet1:/home/jp# apt-get install totem
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
totem: Depends: totem-xine (= 0.100-4) but it is not going to be installed or
totem-gstreamer (= 0.100-4) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Code:
root@libranet1:/home/jp# apt-get install xine
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package xine is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  xine-ui
E: Package xine has no installation candidate
Code:
root@libranet1:/home/jp# apt-get install libdvdcss
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
root@libranet1:/home/jp# apt-get install libdvdcss
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package libdvdcss is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libdvdcss has no installation candidate

I tried Synaptic in adminmenu, but no go. Can Synaptic be done at the command line?
