Am I unique in having a problem with my SB Live producing a continuous static buzz and clicking noise when running the snd-emu10k1 driver?

I have this problem in both Mandrake and Debian (Woody). The only way I've found to make the noise go away is to either mute the PCM output or keep an audio CD in my primary CDROM drive.

Has anyone else found a more practical solution to this problem?

I don't use a SB Live card yinepuhotep but I just wanted to take the opportunity to welcome you to USALUG. Smile

We have several members that do use that sound card. One of them should be along shortly. Very Happy

yinepuhotep, Welcome to USAlug. Very Happy

All of my Linux boxes have and have had SB Live cards. Never experienced your problem. Just a shot in the dark: Run alsamixer and mute your mic.

Wellcome to the lug "yinepuhotep"

Ajusting the master and pci gain for the sound card as root may help.

Only run SuSE so can't tell you how to do it.

Some times a poor power supply can also cause noise on the speakers

Somehow, this sounds like it could be a big part of my problem. I've already had to replace the power supply once (under warranty, thank goodness), because Compaq only installed a 250 watt power supply in it. I've already decided that the next time the power supply blows out, I'm popping for 400 watts, at the very least.

I've also decided that my next system is going to be homebuilt, because I've had bad luck with every prebuilt system I've owned, no matter what brand it was.

I've had noise in my Creative cards from time to time...depending on what sound system the distribution is running. I usually have static under OSS, but it will clear up if I run ALSA. If that don't work, ESD will usually give me clean sound...and hardware mixing to boot.

Short response...change your sound system...maybe that'll fix ya!
