I've been using the filters available in Mozilla Mail. They aren't perfect, but they put a lot of Junk into the Junk folder. From there I can peruse it at my leisure and decide whether to keep it or not. When I read my Email instead from the Web and not using Mozilla's POP or IMAP clients, Yahoo! Mail does a pretty good job of putting SPAM into the Junk folder, too. I haven't really explored any of these packages.
Is there a way to use these package filters (or whatever you call them) when you use Yahoo or some other public Email service as your primary Email address? I do have the ability to use POP to retrieve my mail or read it straight from the Web. If I am using a POP email client, how would I use one of the tools mentioned earlier to further clear out messages on the front end of processing them from my POP server? |

masinick: if you have POP access, fetchmail can be used, and then you can pipe it through any number of filters on your local machine.

I am not sure what my ISP useses, but he has a program that counts invalid e-mail coming from an IP address and when the count reaches 50, the IP is blocked. He also has ClamAV running and adds some manual filtering.
I get less than 5% spam.

I started getting an amazing amount of spam in my usalug account.... I get about 10 emails a day and all are spam. That's not really cool.

I have a gmail account and use evolution to get it via pop and klamav for virus filtering, get few if any spam mails and it learns, pretty neat.

I'm toying with the idea of cancelling my gmail account and mybe setting up another one but with tighter controls.

I recently setup postgrey with my spamassassin/clam av setup on my mail server and spam has dropped off the radar. Most of the time it's newsletters that someone forgot that they signed up for now.
If you can setup your own mail server it's worth checking out.
I've also seen you can setup spamassassin with some mail clients as a third party spam check which might work well.

you know what is sad it that people have to start masking their e-mails. At least those brave enough to even put them up publicly. Example:
Code: | Joh{}oe.com<--{n@d} |
implies that you should put a n@d between the braces giving you John@doe.com
