ok the title has my question. i have been trying to play some movies on the lappy....unfortunately i haven't had any luck with xine, mplayer. i think that i have all the libs though when i tried to get some apps for dvd backupi decided to try vobcopy. when using this it told me that the libdvdread doesn't have

Code:
libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.

so i am assuming that i am missing a lib or something for encrypted dvd's Confused

You need libdvdcss... although its technically illegal, at least in the U.S. because it doesnt pay any royalties like any other dvd decoding software.

I never was able to get it to work in Suse... however in Gentoo I just had to emerge mplayer with DVD support and it took care of everything for me.

If you set up your sources in Yast to included Packman and Guru you should be able to watch DVDs with MPlayer if you install thier version.

I've learned that simply dropping the needed libraries into the proper locations makes no difference - the xine player still says it can't find the library, and yet it is there. Possibly a user/group needs to be assigned to the library.

Anything I've ever read never does more than drop the file into the proper location and for them, all is fine. For me... no differences.

You have to uninstall the SuSE provided xine packages and replace them with pacman packages in addition to installing pacman's libdvdcss and codecs.

Coastie, go to this link:

http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/178/42/

Then scroll down to the section that says DVD playback. It will guide you through downloading the DVD decoding package from the Web and then reinstalling a version of xine that should allow you to playback DVDs.

I have not tried this myself, so let us know how it works?

Germs pacman link now produces this:
Quote:
Now, the new copyright in germany is coming into force, it's no longer allowed to provide tools to breake technical protections.

Therefore we can no longer provide libdvdcss, sorry.

To give you the capability to watch DVD's on linux systems, we want make you the installation as easy as possible.

Download the libdvdcss tar.bz2-file in the same version as the nosrc.rpm from videolan, copy it to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/, download the nosrc.rpm and compile the library using (rpm < 4) rpm --rebuild --target=i686 libdvdcss*.nosrc.rpm or (rpm >= 4) rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i686 libdvdcss*.nosrc.rpm. The final RPM's you can find in /usr/src/packages/RPMS/i686/, you can install it like every other RPM.

Guillermo Ballester Valor has written two littele bash-scripts to automate the download, build and installation of libdvdcss. You can download the scripts here for SuSE >= 9.0 or SuSE <= 8.2.

Homepage: http://www.videolan.org/libdvdcss/
