wine tools basically is n addon to wine which lets you run a whole load more applications that you can only use with windows - eg winamp etc.

Thanks cruddy, for the link. What can those tools do for us?

IMLTHO, stick with XMMS. The amaroK audio engine which SuSe 10.0 defaults to using (Helix) is VERY unresponsive to volume changes on my 1 GHz Athlon - nearly 2 full seconds of delay between the slider being dragged downward and the volume actually dropping. Not cool.
I'm not sure that either of the engines in my SuSe 10.0 version of amaroK are even open source (SuSe 10.0 provided amaroK with RealMedia and Helix engines), where XMMS (again, from SuSe 10.0) uses some open source audio engines (ALSA and OSS).
I'm not saying that amaroK could not be configured to use ALSA or OSS, I never tried hooking them together and amaroK claims it can use other engines... I'm not that talented. amaroK is otherwise an extremely good, modern audio player where, for now, XMMS is copying the old school WinAmp (I say 'for now' because XMMS is actively developing their next generation product).

Ok, I don't need winamp either, but it was just an example to prove that wine tools means that when you run a .exe with wine, it doesn't come up in a load of rubbish. I used it to install a dive monitoring program that came with my dive computer (confused? - http://www.scubapro.co.uk/images/products/large/552.jpg)

Oh, umm, wait - I quoted jbsnake, replied to his quote.

I fixed the link to the image, crudball - the closing parenthesis was being included as part of the URL and that made the link fail. The link works now - neat watch - you are a scuba diver?

Amarok is fully capable of using both the open source Xine engine and the open source Gstreamer. I personally uise Gstreamer which is a good engine and plugs into ALSA quite well. Amarok is really nice if you have thousands of songs, I couldn't go back to xmms.
