I like Free things. "Free" doesn't just mean zero cost; it means the freedom to copy, to share, to modify and redistribute without arbitrary restrictions. Wink

This is what we all want Smile

Confused Confused Confused
Good grief...... your not really complaining because of THAT are you ????????

So, does anyone REALLY think i would care if they copied my work ? I wouldn't........ would i care if you copy my work and don't give me credit.......... yes. © Copyright 2024 Dave Crouse ....... gives me some measure of protection against people that would plagiarize someone else, hopefully at least giving them pause to give credit where credit is due. When in doubt about copying work..... you should ALWAYS ask. That page has 4 ways of getting in touch with me, and if your really clever ......there is a 5th as well. FWIW, I've been asked many times, and never said no yet.

The fact is that everything committed to paper (even digital paper) or canvas, or any medium is protected automatically under copyright by the original creator. Crouse's notice doesn't add or change that -- simply states a fact that he does have copyright on this material.

The implication is that he reserves all rights under law and you must ask permission to use his copyrighted works in a manner that falls outside of fair use.

If he wanted to, he could quickly and easily go to http://creativecommons.org and pick a CC license that fits his philosophy and drop a link to that license right next to the copyright line. CC doesn't relinquish copyright either, but it does make it possible to state openly that you grant certain permissions for use that would otherwise require the asking of permission.

The only way for Crouse to give up his copyright is to release his content into the public domain (but I know few people who will do that and even the Creative Commons people realize that copyright has an important purpose, it's simply that they believe the default restrictions are too tight and there was no way to relax those restrictions legally -- thus CC was born).

I'm pro-open source and free as in libre, but that means I'm free to chose the license under which my works are released -- it doesn't mean I relinquish my rights to it (mostly because while I'm happy to share, I don't approve of people reaping commercial benefit from my work without so much as an acknowledgment of authorship, that's just being sleazy by taking other people's work and calling it your own to profit. In college, we called that plagiarism and cheating).
