Ok, so I'm trying to write a tutorial for a friend of mine. Unfortunately, at one point i would like to take a screencapture of a scrolling window, as there are multiple options in it he needs to highlight. I can't seem to find any software in linux that does this. Anyone know of any?

Nothing I know of, but I suspect there is such a tool. Have you tried searching sourceforge/freshmeat/savannah?
I use the capture/pagedown/capture/pagedown/capture method and stitch them together.

What I do in that case is use Istanbul, and just make a desktop vid of the scrolling.

Yeah, I've been doing that with recordmydesktop. But I don't really LIKE doing it that way. That and I don't know how to tell mencoder to reduce the size of the video when I convert it over.

The only program I know that will do that is called Snaggit for Windows. (I know, I know)
I've looked for the same functionality, but I just haven't seen it.

There's actually DOZENS of programs of freeware in windows that will do it. I used like 4 different programs that had that functionality in windows, all of which were free. Surprising noones bothered to design decent software in linux for screencaptures. I eventually gave up and will do all my trainings in windows still. I don't like doing the video, it's just not as easy to follow.

I think tlmiller was talking about non-web-based windows that have a scroll bar (like a list of properties that scroll down in a config dialog). A program that selects the graphical component and captures its entire contents instead of just what's displayed is very useful.
