|
|
If you're an Open Office user, you've undoubtedly encountered the open source office suite's painstaking slow load up times.
This is a small tutorial to speed things up.
Start Open Office and click on Tools > Options.
This should open the configuration.
Click on Memory in the left menu and change the following settings:
- Number of Steps: 30
- Use for Open Office: 128
- Memory per Object: 20
- Number of Objects: 20
This will give you the most increase in load times.
There are other options to further increase the speed by enabling the Quickstarter.
This is not required, but it helps a little.
Yet another step to speed up the load times is to disable the Java functionality. Some people may frown upon this, as they need the Java function, but that is OK, you have already increased the load speed as much as you can then, no need to proceed further if you need the Java function.
But if you do not need the Java function, proceed to the Java section in the menu.
Now all you have to do is disable it, hit [OK] at the bottom and you are done!
reboot the application to see the results.
NOTE: You are using Linux, no need to reboot the PC! _________________ This block is for DISTRO information ONLY, all other information will be removed by the Site Administrators.

A very noticeable improvement in load time.

Yeah, nearly instantaneous on this particular machine now (the pentium dual core e2200).

In order to have the quickstarter (in debian at least), you need the package openoffice.org-gtk. Don't worry about it, the quickstarters not worth it.

Just modified mine and cannot believe how much of a difference they have made to the start up times.

I am glad everybody likes the small tweaks. As for the Quickstarter icon, it did not change the speed at all, it basically just places a icon in the panel for easier access to your OpenOffice program, something like the quicklaunch for M$. You would be better off creating a icon on the desktop for the part of OpenOffice you use most... Writer, calc, and so on._________________ This block is for DISTRO information ONLY, all other information will be removed by the Site Administrators.
