Updated Sep 2024

Distribution Release: Parted Magic 4.4 stable, also now available 4.5 rc1
partedmagic
This new version of Parted Magic has some major updates. Users can now get online with dial-up networing through our "Start Network" program. Parted Magic is not in the desktop media business, but ALSA sound drivers and ALSA core programs were added if you would like to use a media player. We highly suggest Slackware-12.x packages. Unionfs is now being used for the big directories and Parted Magic's RAM usage, with the "default" boot option, has been halved. That's right, it only takes 256MB of RAM to run completely run from system memory and free up that CDROM drive or USB stick. At boot time the SSH daemon is started and public keys are generated, so that's one less thing for people using SSH to deal with. Last but not least you will notice that Super Grub Disk is now an option in the boot menu.announcement.. http://partedmagic.com/
http://partedmagic.com/download.html

or of course www.distrowartch.com
pmagic-4.3.iso.zip (92.8MB, MD5).

would absolutely love to get out of my current line of work and become a full time Linux System Administrator. If anybody has an opening for a 100% self taught Linux hack, I'm willing to relocate anywhere in the US. Smile

I wish him luck. Him and TOO many others

Updated 16 May 2024 See Update 1.3.0 2024-09-14:

Distribution Release: SystemRescueCd 1.2.0
systemrescue François Dupoux has released SystemRescueCd 1.2.0, a Gentoo-based live CD with a collection of hard disk management and data rescue utilities: "SystemRescueCd 1.2.0 has just been released. It's a major release and it comes with a new kernel version, new desktop environment, and update for important packages. First, the graphical environment has been updated. It's now based on X.Org Server 1.5.3, which improves the hardware support and comes with new drivers. The desktop environment is now Xfce, because it's both very good (very comfortable, many settings) and very small. Parts of Xfce which are not essential and which have many dependencies have not been included. The kernel has been updated to version 2.6.29; it comes with more drivers and it also supports the very promising Btrfs file system (still under heavy development). GParted has been updated to 0.4.5." Read the complete release announcement to learn about other major changes in this release.

PostPosted: Sun Aug 03, 2024 10:17 am    Post subject: Aloofix build kit Reply with quote

Aloofix is a Linux distribution conceptually similar to Ubuntu JeOS (Just enough OS), but much more aggressive when it comes to the term "just enough". The build environment consists of a collection of makefiles, scripts, and configuration files capable of creating a bootable ISO image. This ISO image contains a small set of scripts and utility programs for installing Aloofix on a primary hard drive in a virtual machine environment. The build environment provides the raw materials for creating and provisioning a set of guest instances for VirtualBox, VMware, and QEMU.

Aloofix is build kit for creating a minimalist Linux distribution optimized for running in a virtual machine.

Version 0.7 is now available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/aloofix/

Super Grub
We want Linux newbies to restore their new toy, but also help the Linux advanced user make potentially dangerous operations to the MBR in a safe way. Super Grub Disk is also a teaching tool to help you learn more about bootloaders and the booting process. After all, booting is the most important thing your computer does -- without the boot process, you would not have an operating system to use!

Finnix 92.0 NOTE New version 92.1 ( Kernel upgraded to Debian 2.6.26-7 and a few other changes. 6 Dec 2024
finnix Ryan Finnie has announced the release of Finnix 920, a specialist, Debian-based live CD for system administrators: Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing. You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more. Finnix includes the latest technology for system administrators, with Linux kernel 2.6.25, LVM2, encrypted partitions, etc. And above all, Finnix is small; currently the entire distribution is over 300MiB, but is dynamically compressed into a bootable image of about 100MiB1. Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user, and does not include any desktops, productivity tools, or sound support, in order to keep distribution size low. Graphical boot menu though

New version 6 Oct 2024

Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla server edition. Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla server edition is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla server edition was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!
Almost any file system. ( no LVM1, 2 OK ) can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.

Ranish Partition Manager is a powerful hard disk partitioning tool.
It gives users high level of control for running multiple operating systems,
such as Linux, Windows 98/XP, FreeDOS, and FreeBSD on a single disk.

It includes command line interface and simulation mode that works with large files
so you can safely experiment before working on the real hard drive partition tables.

GParted is an industrial-strength package for creating, destroying, resizing, moving, checking and copying partitions, and the file systems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganizing disk usage, copying data residing on hard disks and mirroring one partition with another (disk imaging). See Features, before using it.

GParted uses GNU libparted to detect and manipulate devices and partition tables.
