I'm wondering if ssh is supposed to start on session login with Linux regardless of circumstances?

I found today in Cooker that ssh was running (had an error with it), and it's bugging me. At no time did I set up an ssh server, nor even install anything that I can recall for ssh.

I'm wondering because I have a sound issue going on in Cooker, and it *seems* anyway (by pid) that ssh *could* be interfering with PulseAudio (but I'm not sure).

Pastebin of .xsession-errors here.

Is it like, part of default install with Mandriva or Linux in general? This is what I can't remember.

Thanks!

I think openssh-client at least, is part of most standard installations and is included in most distributions' default package lists. I usually can access the other hosts on my lan right away via ssh/konqueror, after a fresh install. I think it's inclusion is fairly common nowadays.
Openssh-server I cant say for sure.

Any clue where the errors are coming from with it in the pastebin?

Thanks much.

That link was timing out this morning (5am EST).
I'll try again when I get home from work.

Basically, it goes like this:
Code:
#
** Message: another SSH agent is running at: /tmp/ssh-LsKFVX4011/agent.4011
#
Window manager warning: Failed to read saved session file /home/dedanna/.config/metacity/sessions/10b36621c462326d4b122469575743903100000040110026.ms: Failed to open file '/home/dedanna/.config/metacity/sessions/10b36621c462326d4b122469575743903100000040110026.ms': No such file or directory

Does this say anything at all?

Thanks!

I saw that. This is a Gnome issue which I have never used, but you could try creating another user account to see if the problem is specific to your regular account. When I troubleshoot a KDE problem, I either create a temporary account or check a different account (ie., one that I forget to delete after a troubleshooting session) and see if the error occur there. If the error doesn't occur in the temp account, I proceed from there.
Sorry if I'm not much help with this, as I am a KDE person. Smile
As to the ssh-agent thing, try commenting out the "use ssh-agent" line in /etc/X11/xsessions.options.

An SSH Agent is *not* a server. It's a helper tool that allows you to do some pretty handy pass-through authentication. You log on to server X, using a key-based authorization scheme that requires you to enter your key password. The agent caches the key (so you don't have to reenter the password during this session), and will pass that authorization information on to any servers you SSH to from server X. It's not a security issue to have it running on user session startup.

I just have to track down the failed message on it then.
