POP3 is one of the protocols used to grab Email messages from a mail server that generally resides on another system. It is the most common type of mail server for incoming mail. POP stands for Post Office Protocol.

Dovecat is a mail server that supports both POP3 and IMAP4 incoming mail protocols.

Marcel Gagne, author of the monthly column, "Cooking With Linux" and author of numerous books and the owner of the WFTL - the Writer and Free Thinker at Large forums, blogs, and Podcasts, wrote an article a number of years ago that helps simplify even a Sendmail setup. Read that article here.

qpopper is a popular POP3 mail server.
Red Hat documentation provides yet another source of information about both incoming and sending mail servers.

The Linux Documentation Project rounds out the discussion with elements for both sending and receiving mail and how to set up server configurations for both.
