PostPosted: Sun Oct 26, 2024 9:45 pm    Post subject: New user needs help with SUSE 11.0 completing boot Reply with quote

I started to experience trouble with SUSE 11.0 completing its booting.

I have a dual boot system and when I select to use the SUSE OS it prompts me for my password. After entering my password my screen goes blank accept for the mouse arrow being visible.

I attempted to boot using the Failsafe selection and noticed the following messages appear:

ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
qc timeout (cmd 0xec)

Any help that can be provided is greatly appreciated.

try adding "noapic" to the grub boot line.

Sorry for my lack of linux knowledge, but where/how exactly do I find the grub boot line?

Is this a laptop ???

as root open up a text editor... browse to /boot/grub/menu.lst

it should look "something" like this........

Quote:

# Config file for GRUB - The GNU GRand Unified Bootloader
# /boot/grub/menu.lst

# DEVICE NAME CONVERSIONS
#
# Linux Grub
# -------------------------
# /dev/fd0 (fd0)
# /dev/hda (hd0)
# /dev/hdb2 (hd1,1)
# /dev/hda3 (hd0,2)
#

# FRAMEBUFFER RESOLUTION SETTINGS
# +-------------------------------------------------+
# | 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
# ----+--------------------------------------------
# 256 | 0x301=769 0x303=771 0x305=773 0x307=775
# 32K | 0x310=784 0x313=787 0x316=790 0x319=793
# 64K | 0x311=785 0x314=788 0x317=791 0x31A=794
# 16M | 0x312=786 0x315=789 0x318=792 0x31B=795
# +-------------------------------------------------+

# general configuration:
timeout 5
default 0
color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue

# boot sections follow
# each is implicitly numbered from 0 in the order of appearance below
#
# TIP: If you want a 1024x768 framebuffer, add "vga=773" to your kernel line.
#-*

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro vga=773
initrd /kernel26.img

kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro vga=773
would be the line in particular that I am refering to......... add noapic
at the end.......

kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro vga=773 noapic

see if that works. A live linux disk like SLAX comes in handy for times like these Wink Alternatively , you COULD change the boot line of grub as it comes up.... hitting ESC to cancel the automatic boot.... and then hitting "e" to edit the boot line ......... a much easier way imho to "test" different options...........some of which include........

noapic

noapic nolapic

noapic acpi=noirq

noapic acpi=off

noapictimer

noapictimer irqpoll

noapic acpi=off

noapic acpi=noirq nolapic

No it is not a laptop, it's a HP Pavillion with an AMD Phenom 9550 quad-core processor.

The problem I am having is after I am prompted for root password and press enter my system appears to lock up and I cannot do anything accept perform a hard boot.

Is there anything I can do to possibly get a command line prompt during boot up that will allow me to edit this file?

At the OS boot selection screen there should be the words "Boot Options|".
That's the prompt; When the screen appears, make sure Opensuse is highlighted and type "noapic". Hit enter.

Thanks, I'll give that a try and let you know how I come out.

If by chance this doesn't correct my problem is there an easy way to uninstall SUSE? I still have the iso image on DVD that I downloaded from the SUSE site.

No need to uninstall it..... you could

1. Use the disk to repair installed system
or if that doesn't work
2. do an install "upgrade installed system"
and if that still doesn't work
3. do a fresh "new install", with your formating done during the install.

My menu.lst file in the grub directory is as follows:

# Modified by YaST2
default 0
timeout 8

gfxmenu (hd0,5)/boot/message

###Don't change this comment - YaSt2 identifier:Original name:linux###

title openSUSE 11.0 - 2.6.25.5-1.1

root (hd0,5)

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.5-1.1 - pae root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-
SATA_Hitachi_HDS7210_GTE200P8GKM6HE-part6 resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent showopts vga=0x317

initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.25.5-1.1-pae

I added "noapic" at the end of the vga=0x317 statement, and then attempted to boot the system. When I typed in my root password the screen blinked displaying the OPENSUSE 11 screen before going completely blank with only the mouse arrow visible.

Did I include the "noapic" on the correct line?

Thanks.

Are you getting to the KDE/Gnome login screen? Sounds like you are to me, but I could be reading wrong. If so it could be a corrupted user profile.

sounds like you are getting the system booted up, however it now sounds like your graphics xorg file could be corrupt. I believe you can use a text console ALT+F1 and login as root and run "sax2" to configure your graphics card....... at least that's how i remember it... been awhile since I used opensuse.

It does sound like the login screen, not the boot screen. But if you get the GUI login screen then X should be ok. Maybe it's a corrupted .kde profile?

Another thing: is this HP model's CPU 64-bit? What is the model number of the HP?
