Darren Austin has come through and dedicated some space
at slackware.org.uk
http://www.slackware.org.uk/absolute/
ftp://ftp.slackware.org.uk/absolute/
** NOTE: 11:09 am est, 11/16/2008 **
gslapt was not working initially,
needed to add/tweak files in repository.
I have been working on this and aryr100 has reported success in
updating the /absolute-current directory with gslapt.
I will work on the other directories ASAP. |

Good news
My last update ( with 12 ) was slow and painful, but partially my fault.
Have not installed 12.1 yet.

Very nice! I have nothing but positive things to say about Paul Sherman and his Absolute Linux project. Slackware has always been a solid Linux distribution. With Absolute Linux, it is a fast and easy one too. |

Hey, Brian! How goes it?
I'd like to concur, since Paul Sherman is from the same general area as where I live, and I'm a real paisano kind of guy. . . but I've had trouble installing Absolute 12.2.1, and getting very little response from the Absolute Forum, except for one member who is trying to keep my spirits up, without actually being able to solve my problems. I'm not giving up, but have had to put Absolute on a back burner for a week or two while I do other things. Since the Mepis 8.0 User's Manual has now been put to bed in it's version 1.1, I hope to have time to just be a distro junkie again for a while.
One of my main problems is that I'm pretty Debian-centric, having been introduced to Linux via Ubuntu "Warty Warthog" and Mepis 3.3.1-1. SLAX is about as slackware as I've gotten, and I'm looking "to get down with it". . . but maybe I just need to go totally Slack, and then try the offshoots later, instead of the other way 'round.
If you're down with Absolute, get on their forum and help me liven things up.
U the man,
SilverBear

I have not used Absolute recently, Silver Bear. Germ is, I believe, our resident local expert on Absolute. That said, I have installed it a few times and I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with it. I suspect that Paul Sherman is preoccupied (as we often find with Warren Woodford) either with development or other things in life.
What I have to tell you about Absolute Linux is that it is a LESS flexible offshoot of Slackware than Vector, Zenwalk, or Slackware itself, much less Arch, which uses packages in the same .tgz format but, of course, utilizes its own snappy pacman package manager.
The sell on Absolute is that it is a very nice install it and go type of system, quite suitable for every day desktop use, much in the spirit of MEPIS in that regard. Releases or updates happen pretty frequently, that's the good side. The bad side is that unless there are releases, there really are not very good updating mechanisms unless you grab packages from the -CURRENT branch - you can, I believe, use Slackware-CURRENT. |
