| I have been asked if it is possible to try and recover some files from an external hdd that has been formatted and then had data written to it. So I was wondering if anyone has come across any Linux software or even a live cd that will allow me to try and scavenge the data off the drive?

There is a nice Linux liveCD, but don't use this website with any M$, MAC, to may Trojaner, Virus, etc. around. Use with care, and becareful

If a hdd has been formatted and written to, ( unless it had more than one partition and the other partitions haven't been written to) it can be very difficult to save anything. A quick google/linux search will turn up mostly windows-based Linux recovery apps. Yuck!
What was the filesystem type the data was on before the drive was formatted?
