First there was Desktop Wars I: Let the Flames Begin, December 2024, in which
Linus wrote:
I personally just encourage people to switch to KDE.

This "users are idiots, and are confused by functionality" mentality of
Gnome is a disease. If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will
use it. I don't use Gnome, because in striving to be simple, it has long
since reached the point where it simply doesn't do what I need it to do.

Please, just tell people to use KDE.

Linus

and Gnome users were banished to the *nix hinterlands along with OSX and Vista victims.

But after 3 years in exile, coming to a Desktop near you soon, is the latest installment Desktop Wars II: h*** Freezes Over, Jan 2024, in which
Linus wrote:
Question:
Another open source project that underwent a big change was KDE with version 4.0. They released a lot of fundamental architectural changes with 4.0 and it received some negative reviews. As a KDE user how has this impacted you?

Answer:
I used to be a KDE user. I thought KDE 4.0 was such a disaster I switched to GNOME. I hate the fact that my right button doesn't do what I want it to do. But the whole "break everything" model is painful for users and they can choose to use something else.

I realise the reason for the 4.0 release, but I think they did it badly. They did so may changes it was a half-baked release. It may turn out to be the right decision in the end and I will re-try KDE, but I suspect I'm not the only person they lost.

It'll be pretty funny watching how the less enlightened users of both user-bases slug this one out over the intertubes Wink

All credit, to the people here, we tend to be quite civilised in expressing our preferences.

It only took him 4 years to come around to richard's way of thinking .... Laughing Laughing ...... (for those that didn't know, richard loves Gnome Smile ) ....... personally, I'd rather use XFCE - fluxbox or IceWM Very Happy

I'll take KDE4 over Gnome...but BARELY.

If I knew how to get a graphical file manager set up as well as Konqueror on KDE3, I'd probably be willing to do gnome instead of KDE4. But I don't. (IE - dual panel, ability to have the "system" and "storage media" quick buttons, terminal emulator, button to open terminal, no text on toolbars, etc.)

KDE3 is still king of the window managers. GNOMEs belong in the garden, not on the desktop.

/me ducks and runs

Sorry, gotta agree with bd. Gnomes don't belong on the desktop. They're just irritating.

I guess I've used KDE for most of the time I've been using Linux.... there was that time long long ago when I used redhat..... but I really do prefer KDE, it's just more polished and it's much easier to switch people to the KDE desktop from M$ than it is to get them to switch to gnome or xfce or some other dm/wm. At least, that's been my experience.

KDE3 was not bad. I only preferred GNOME over it for small, mostly visual/aesthetic reasons. But I like GNOME a lot more than KDE4. KDE4 just doesn't appeal to me.

Actually, I'm using Xubuntu on my slower laptop, and I'm really getting to like XFCE. At this point, I don't think it will replace GNOME for me, but it's a very nice DE that I will continue to use.

Having started with Mandrake, and some others that are the reason I am no longer able to hold my wine glass...or beer bottle for shaking, all of which used KDE once it became available..I have an affinity for K aps. In particular, Konqueror, and K3b. I used to buy Red Hat in days of yore ( before cable ), but never really cared for the way it felt. Gnome aps just did not cut it for me.

Of late, I have run several open box, xfce, and other lite desktops. They usually leave me feeling like I am still using Amiga, or a Commadore, but I can't find the 5 1/2 floppy <G><
Well, better implementations of xfce, not so much...

In any case, I would side KDE..even if it is KDE4 Barf. Those above are correct, a Gnome belongs in the garden. ~ snicker[/b]

BTW, my misile defense shield is up, skywatch is armed and ready, and the marines are on alert.
