Yes you heard it correctly but it is a bit of a strange thing.

I was given recently a desktop computer but someone to look at as it had a strange problem when it came to installing Windows. When Windows is installed it only allows you to use 640*480 resolution and 4 bit colour and the screen is covered by vertical dotted lines even when Windows is loading. This has happened with XP, Vista and even Windows 7 but when I install any Linux distro on it it works fine. Just for your info the machine has the following spec's

Athlon XP4000+ (2.4GHz)
Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLi Motherboard
GeForce 7600GS 512MB PCI-e Graphics card
2GB DDR 333 RAM 4*512MB Sticks
250GB Sata HDD
DVD Writer
17" Acer CRT Monitor

I have to say that this has got me stumped as all the components have been tested and are working fine in other systems but when they are put together this happens.....

Well . . . the answer is obvious. This box has had enough of winders and it's not gonna take anymore. Laughing

Unfortunately its not my box, though I could end up with it if I cannot solve the problem.

When you say it works in Linux, I assume you are using the plain xorg driver in Linux and not the proprietary Linux Nvidia driver?

The only thing I can possibly think of is there's some problem with that combination of hardware and the nvidia driver (grasping at straws here). Which version of the nvidia driver is it using in windows? The latest nvidia windows XP driver for the 7600 series is here . . .

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_181.22_whql.html

Any other ideas guys?

oh! this is a problem - thought it was a comment.

well if that is the case then i would find older nvidia drivers that are explicitly labeled stable.

probably this one -> http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html

That would be a good start. Wink

Also make sure you've got the nforce chipset driver stuff loaded as well. That may enable the functions of the board so the video works properly...

I also am running nVidia 7600 GS, (x2) SLI mode.

I use the 180.51 version of video driver, and I am having no issues.

RE: Computer only works well with Linux

Maybe it is catching? A swine ( pig MS ) virus , or some such and might spread <G><

I had a strange one like that, but showed up worse with Linux, and it turned out to be the nforce4 board, I believe it was a 7600 or 8500 card ( don't remember for sure ), and my monitor combination with VGA cable. But I assume you are using your monitor, and not the one where the original problem showed up. DVI cable had a problem, and a new one fixed the problem, but never did figure out why that combination did ( acted ) as it did.
