I am going to attempt a tutorial of creating a lightning bolt using the Gimp.
My current Gimp version is 2.4.7, so some of these steps may be slightly different than your version.

  1. Open the Gimp.
  2. Select File, and then New.
  3. I selected 1440x900 for a wallpaper for my screen resolution.
  4. Select the Rectangle Select Tool and select part of your image like so.

  5. Use the Bucket Fill Tool, and fill the selected area with black.

  6. Select None, to unselect the current selection.
  7. Select Filters, Blur, Gaussian Blur. Select between 190 - 200 for the blur radius.

  8. Select Filters, Render, Clouds, Difference Clouds

    X and Y settings were about 10
    Detail was set to 15

You should start to see something resembling lightning, but it is the wrong color.
  9. Select Colors, Invert

Now the lightning is starting to take shape.
  10. Select Colors, Levels.

  11. Select and drag the black triangle from the Input towards the right, until only the lightning is still visible.

So, what you should have now is a lightning bolt. Lets add some color to liven it up.
  12. Select Colors, Colorize. Saturation 100, and I selected the Hue to be somewhere between 205 and 215 for a nice blue.

    And the results.

  13. If you wish to copy and paste the lightning into and other image, or maybe to add more lightning bolts, Select By Color, and select the black area.
  14. Then select Invert

Rotate add curves instead of straight line in your steps and tweak the settings to your liking...

Enjoy.

You probably never knew my tux was Carbon fiber. It is kind of hard to tell since it is such a small scale of the original. Very Happy

I have my tux xcf file if you want to manipulate one for yourself.

I have challenged those that use Photochop and Inkscape many times to "create" stuff from scratch.
Many can manipulate graphics, but from scratch I do better than them most the time.

I am somewhat bragging, but I have learned long ago, it is not the tools that you use, it is what you can do with them.
I was inspired by watching videos of people using MS Paint. First thing I thought was MS Paint is not a worthy product, but after looking at a few videos, I figured I should be doing better with the tools I am currently using. So, I hunt down tutorials try them out, and attempt to do better than the tutorials.

You want a list of Gimp tutorials, here you go.
