Distribution Release: Toorox 04.2009
toorox Joern Lindau has released a new version of Toorox, an i686-optimised, Gentoo-based live DVD which boots into a KDE desktop using KNOPPIX hardware auto-detection and auto-configuration technologies: "A new release of Toorox is done and available in the download section. Now you can simply make a live USB pen drive with it. The KDE was updated to 4.2.2 and OpenOffice.org speaks German and English. There are no significant changes to the prior version except package updates and small bug fixes. Changes: contains Iceweasel 3.0.9 web browser; the Windows emulator WINE was updated to 1.1.19; VLC media player 0.99a; Clam antivirus 0.95.1." Read the complete release announcement to learn more about Toorox. http://toorox.de/

Download the live DVD image from here: http://toorox.de/

Toorox_04.2009.iso (1,761MB).

NOTE They apparently have very limited bandwidth, and it took several tries to get the ISO. Maybe after the distrowatch effect is over, it will be easier.

I got it, but it hangs up on boot on this box
OTOH, Sabayon and Calculate both work fine.
I'll try this one on another box

Never could bring myself to like Sabayon. The more recent versions at least run for me, but still don't impress in the least. Calculate I think looks REALLY nice when they get their installer improved. I have no interest in trying out toorox since I can't understand why anyone still bothers with 686 distros considering how long 64-bit processors have been out, and the fact that now 64-bit has all the software support that the ancient 32-bit does.

Here with Calculate Linux 9.6 Live on test box using default browser..oh there it is, FF.

This was a pain to get going. Thought I had a bad burn at first.
Often when some one produces a new Live, and it has trouble getting up, I disconnect All USB stuff, including the flash card readers if possible, and it can be coaxed to boot up. This was one of those. Very slow till up.

Took half a dozen tries. It would come to the second screen and stop. I would go get a cup of coffee, or something, ands it would set there. MY hardware? who knows. It acted like it was waiting for a sign in screen, but there was none. Tried it with and without the X server in case that was the problem

Once up, it was pretty nice if lousy default resolution live. All the ones up to monitor default were possible, but the letters were only actually readable around 1060 x 768 live. Possibly logging off and back on would have cleared that up, but as much trouble as I had getting it up I did not try <G>< All distorted at most other resolutions. I don't know what type fonts, or a log off required... but suspect that is the problem.

Came up and no internet. It found none of the wired connections as far as I could tell, at least not the hot one.. So I clicked on the wicd icon on the top and said yes to wifi, and was online.

This thing has promise, and I might install it to see where that goes, and if any better resolution. I will also try the wired RTL 8138 instead of the newer nvidia ethernet controller.

Correction. I found the netrwork controller clicking on "preferences" in the wicd networ manager. The BIG pop up about wifi not connected distracted from the total purpose of the network manager. My bad.

Couldn't agree more. It's a very promising, but it's got some serious bugs, and while functional, the installer s****. I'm here with it installed, and looks great dual monitor 1680x1050 + 1280x1024 on Nvidia. Doesn't even have a CLUE what my webcam is though. Everything else pretty much worked out of the box.

New version of TRX Toofox

Distribution Release: Toorox 06.2009
toorox Joern Lindau has announced the release of Toorox 06.2009, a Gentoo-based live DVD featuring the latest KDE 4: "Toorox 06.2009 is finished now. As always, the KDE was updated to the latest version 4.2.4. The recent CVS snapshot of the lancelot_part plasmoid was included because Qt was updated to 4.5.1 and the old version of the plasmoid had some trouble with it. The USB stick creator script was optimised; now there are three options - static, personal and encrypted. For the last two options the home folder will be stored and with the remaining option even password-encrypted when shut down. Now two partitions will be created - ext2 for Toorox and FAT32 for regular data storage on the pen drive. Some users had kernel panics after installation and booting from an USB hard disk - this has been fixed." Here is the brief release announcement.

Just installed Calculate 9.7. I've never been a huge fan of Gentoo, but WOW, did it take a downturn. I unmerged some of the worthless programs (djview3, kontact, kmail, korganizer, kaddressbook, gwenview, kscd, kmail, kopete, kolourpaint, etc), and a couple are now REQUIRED by things like phonon, okular and K3b. Thoroughly unimpressed, and will be removing it once I reboot. I guess it's back to Arch on the desktop since Calculate decided to go the "we're making completely random programs dependencies of programs that are actually essential to a working desktop" route.
