From a friend. I haven't had a whole lot of time lately. Errin has run into some more health issues, but that's another story. Anyway, I have a buddy that needs some networking help for a music server he is building.

Quote:
i'm setting up a music ftp server and ran into a few snags.
i'd like to rssh to keep users locked into a few commands and one directory.
i've successfully setup networking and can ssh into the box right now. (it's a server at my dad's shop).
i also set up nfs to pull a hard drive space from the local nas. (very happy that i did that on my own!)

but i'm stuck with the sftp/ssh/rssh users thing.
would you mind giving me a hand with this?

I'm not sure if sftp is the way to go for a music server? any ideas?

it's a alternative way to set a private server up. Plus it is a easy way Wink

I'm not sure we are getting what is really being asked Razz Does he want to stream music? or just have music available for ftp/ssh access and deal with playing it on the client side? or something else? Razz and is it just for him, or multiple people?

streaming, i would suggest icecast

otherwise, ssh is fine and you could either:
1. chroot jail them (what i would do)
2. change the permissions on all commands they dont need to r-xr-x---

ftp: you could set up vsftpd or similar, neither are hard at all to set up. Smile

as for domains you could use dyndns.org (or if you want more control: editdns.org) you can purchase your own domain elsewhere and use their nameservers fyi Smile

I use noip for my purposes.

It works well, they offer free domains (you get a subdomain redirected) or you can use your own domain.

Ther fees for hosting your own domain are reasonable, but you can also use the free service if you don't mind a rather bland domain.

An older document but the concept is still there:
http://www.kegel.com/crosstool/current/doc/chroot-login-howto.html

Another good one (prob easier even though its longer):
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-linux-unix-rssh-chroot-jail-setup.html

Basically the idea is to limit the user to the very minimal set of commands and upon login stick them in their "jail cell" with nothing but the sheets and blankets and remove the ability to see anything else outside the brick walls Razz.

Other good links:
http://www.howtoforge.com/chroot_ssh_sftp_debian_etch
http://www.fuschlberger.net/programs/ssh-scp-sftp-chroot-jail/ (this guy has a nice little script Smile)

hope that helps Smile
