"on ARM, SH, MIPS & Blackfin based silicon", those are not common consumer PC platforms, unfortunately.

I'm not too far behind that with RockBox loaded onto my Sansa e260: <4 seconds.

I hate to bring it up, but what is the big hurry? <G><

On average I set my personal boxes up to show status every boot, and then have two or three menus to go through. Too fast and I won't have the coffee poured and get a sip before it is looking for a password. No need to be there to go through the menu if I want the default.

The hurries have to do with consumer expectations for set top boxes, media players, maybe tablets, definitely for cellphones, etc., slow doesn't cut it there. MIPS processors? Depends on which processor - if I recall correctly, HDS (Human Designed Stations) used certain MIPS processors (I think it was MIPS), the stations I've used were graphics terminals into a Unix environment, were fairly old back in 1995. I remember using our first Solaris Desktop on it.

All those devices are using 'processors', but the processors aren't likely to be seen in a PC, netbook or laptop.

Well....... from a commercial perspective... If you can reboot your system in one second or less.....down time is minimized ALOT. This would be very important from a commercial standpoint and something that many businesses would pay for.

You have a point with mobile, and those for whom the latest bragging rights are more important than common sense, but in enterprise the machine get turned on and may or may not be shut down at night...green be darned <G><

I came turned on the boxes of interest, and shut them down when we left for the night.

OTOH, if all this can be done without sacrifice of important security or functionality...why not.
One more selling point in a complex and competitive business.

Or you could set your BIOS to boot at certain times, like at 06:50 so it's up and ready for you at 07:00 when you get in for work.
Like I do at work...
10 minutes to boot up.
Tons of time.
