Salix OS Salix OS is a lightweight, Slackware-based distribution with Xfce. The project's first live CD edition was released yesterday: "After a few months of development we are pleased to release the final version of Salix Live 13.0 (32-bit). Absolute is one that I try every time, and usually try to keep a copy, a good'ern.
There are a BUNCH of good slackwre clones. Thought instead of splattering them all over as I have been doing, I'd consolidate them here as it rolls.

2010-05-27 Distribution Release: Zenwalk Linux 6.4
Zenwalk Linux Jean-Philippe Guillemin has announced the release of Zenwalk Linux 6.4, a Slackware-based distribution with the Xfce desktop, custom package management, and many user-friendly features: "Zenwalk Linux 6.4 provides many enhancements at system and application levels, while confirming the maturity and feature stability of Zenwalk. The brand new 2.6.33.4 kernel is featuring the new BFS scheduler, designed for the best desktop interactivity on multi-core CPUs while taking the most of lower specification machines. You'll notice better responsiveness of graphical applications, better real-time performance of sound applications (very low latency), and efficiency of 'niced' commands (compilation tasks can really be niced in a way they don't disturb other applications). Like its predecessor, Zenwalk 6.4 features ext4 as the main file system, and latest versions of most applications and desktop environments." Available in both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, Salix 13.1 is fully backwards compatible with Slackware 13.1. Salix 13.1 is built on top of a Slackware 13.1 base and offers a streamlined Xfce desktop environment with selected applications following the 'one application per task' philosophy. Did Salix install. Everything working out of the box, maintenance looks OK. Hot ethernet found and up on boot. Neat xfce desktop. Default monitor resolution out of the gate.

LILO found windows ( 2K which is soon defunct ) without prompting, but not the other Linux. Work to do. Snappy, clean OS. Gonna play with it for a while

Distribution Release: Absolute Linux 13.1.1
Absolute Linux Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.1.1, a lightweight Slackware-based distribution with IceWM: " Absolute 13.1.1 released. New kernel and a boatload of updates from Slackware. Almost replaced Firefox with Google Chrome (which I really like) but due to an endless 'upload' bug that keeps crashing Chrome when you try to upload a file, it'll be in the CD2 directory for testing/playing. The 13.1.0 release was a naming snafu as it pre-dated Slackware's update. This release (13.1.1) incorporates Slackware 13.1 as well as several re-compiled packages on Absolute and a couple of scripting changes. Some add-ons in the CD2 directory of the FTP sites (Google Chrome and Picasa for example), gmail-notify added and incorporated into email notification setup as an option. Add/Remove programs (PERL script) updated." There is a brief release announcement on the project's home page http://www.absolutelinux.org/ and slightly more detailed one in the forum. http://absolutelinux.org/forum/?topic=727.0

This is nearly always a very good release. I have not tested one in a while, but every version I have used in the past has always worked REALLY WELL and it is FAST stuff too.

The one reason I don't typically stick with it is that this software is usually download and replace software, as opposed to upgrade or rolling upgrade software. I could organize a separate /home partition for my stuff, but even if I did that, I'd have to manage the mount points every time I installed, so this does not work optimally for me as my main desktop system.

I have not, however, had many complaints at all about how it works. If you organize your system so that the base system software can be easily replaced, then this might work really well for you. Paul Sherman fixes problems quickly and tends to release early and often.

I ran Absolute for quite a while. Was quiet too <G><
Out of the gate everything just worked. Fast clean and dependable. Then on 3AM install, I grabbed the wrong HD, or read it wrong, and overwrote it. OOOPS. Thought I had just screwed up LILO. but no such luck.

This one goes in ( Properly indicated <G>< )
