I use SeaMonkey as my main browser but I always keep the current Firefox around, too. Someone mentioned swiftfox and I hadn't looked at it in a while.
I grabbed the Swiftfox 3.6.3 tarball and gave it a spin. Very nice. No compatibility problems with my installed firefox extensions. I can't really say that it's any faster than Firefox, but still, a job well done.

Too bad Swiftweasel, which is somewhat similar to Swiftfox, but without the binary license restriction, does not keep up to current versions very well; the latest Swiftweasel implementation is 3.5.6, whereas the most current Swiftfox is pretty close to current, with 3.6.3 the release (wonder how long it will take when Firefox 3.6.4, currently in testing, is finalized)?
Swiftweasel has a few of the browser speedups found with Fasterfox, such as turning off IPV6 address resolution, including AdBlock Plus and a few other common add-ons, and packaging it all together.
None of these Firefox derivatives do anything you cannot also accomplish on your own, but Swiftfox and Swiftweasel do them a bit more effectively and can save you some time. What I often do, since these are not always immediately available or as current as what is otherwise available is that I keep a toolchest of modifications that I can either copy and paste, run as a script, or at least a set of notes to quickly set up my environment in a consistent way. When these derivatives are available and current, they make that job a bit easier, more automatic, and faster. |
