Some less well known Distros based on the *bumtus.

Some say there are 60 or more derivatives of Ubuntu in the wild now. We all are familiar with some of the more popular ones, but what about some of the local grown ones now apearing. Some of which have turned out to be quite good. Going to take a look at some of the lesser known ones as threy come out. Some references

Ylmf is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution with the GNOME desktop tweaked to resemble Microsoft Windows XP. The project releases separate Chinese and English editions of the product.

NEW • Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5
Trisquel GNU/Linux Rubén Rodríguez Pérez has announced the release of Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5, a completely "libre" distribution (as defined by the Free Software Foundation) based on Ubuntu: "Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5, code name 'Awen', is ready. This release is a fully free Ubuntu 9.10 derivative that includes extra software, better multimedia support, more translations and faster configuration. For this release we used ext4 for the root file system and XFS for the home one, to have a balance between speed and usability. Some important features include a much faster boot process and the ability to encrypt the home directory. All packages were updated, including: Linux-libre kernel 2.6.31, X.Org 7.4, GNOME 2.28, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, a Mozilla-based web browser 3.5." I appreciate the value of specialization and forking in the open source community, but sometimes I feel it gets way out of hand and results in a lot of wasted effort / reinventing the wheel.

To me, packaging up a distro and including another theme/name and changing the software packages that get installed by default seems pretty silly to me - I see this a lot with like audio/video editing, or kids/education distros. I think the cases where there are some significant modifications made, such as the installation, custom software, and modifications to the system scripts then it starts to become credible - MythBuntu being a good example.

There is some concern, but I see people all over the World, in many cases creating local language versions of derivatives of one of the majors. Often managing to add English or another language. Sometimes on machines we would frown on. There may be a waste of time or effort, but if they give back even in small ways, I see it as a plus.

Local Governments are producing there own versions all over the World, occasionally using or personalizing an existing distro, but most often creating their own derivative. I see it as a good thing as long as they give back.

I have tried a LOT of those I have posted.

As you say, some, to me, could be considered a waste of time, but many are quite good. And often there is little to be able say it was spun off from the major that was the start.

Netrunner is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu with a focus on options that won't make it into mainline Ubuntu and alternatives to some mainline Ubuntu decisions. Some features are WINE included by default, some selected Qt/KDE applications in the GNOME desktop, and no Mono.
It comes with a variety of programs pre-installed like VLC, acetoneiso2 and audacious.
WINE is already pre-installed, including winetricks.
It is mono-free, to provide a testcase for a “clean” *buntu that is not depending on a competitor technology.
It also features some launchers on an extra panel to popular web-services like Gmail and Youtube.
