REVIEWER: Lynch
A true measure of any certification prep book is how well it prepares the person
reading it to take the certification exam; with a few minor exceptions, this book
delivers what it claims to do.
The LPI certification was started to provide a vendor-neutral certification for
Linux IT professionals. It takes an Open Source approach by allowing the public to have
input into the subjects and questions that appear on the test. There are three levels
of certification. This book deals with the level 1 exam.
The level 1 exam is divided into two parts:
The 1st( exam 101) part is about:
commands
devices and filesystems
boot and runlevels
documentation
administrative tasks.
The 2nd part (exam 102) concerns itself with:
hardware
installation and package management
the kernel
text editing, processing and printing
X
networking fundamentals and services
security
Jeffrey Dean has written this book in a very clear and easy to understand style.
There are no copied-and-pasted man page entries; when a command is broken down to
it's syntax and options, the form followed is similar to a man page but with just
the summary, syntax, most commonly used options and a few examples. The examples
are fairly easy to understand and there are ample footnotes and text boxes to alert the
reader about what to expect to find on the exam. All the
objectives for each exam (101 and 102) are laid out in order and explained before
getting into the details of the pertinent commands and system files involved in a
particular command or procedure. There are times when the author provides info
beyond the scope of the exam topics for the sake of completeness.
This is a nice consideration and makes the book more than just a exam prep guide; it could be
used as a regular quick reference, also.
At the end of both sections, there are a few more helpful things to aid the person taking the exams:
A section-by-section summary of the objectives
A practice test (plus answers)
And what the author call a Highlighter's Index, which is self-explanatory.
At the end of the book there is a glossary of terms
Overall, this is a very useful book, even if you are not taking the exams. Just as a
reference or a series of tutorials, makes this a worthwhile addition to someone's Linux bookshelf.
The only thing about this book that could be considered a minus are the few instances where the graphics used in some examples are misplaced. This could be confusing to someone totally new to Linux.
One hopes these minor errors will be attended to before a new edition is published.

Thanks for the review. I haven't read the book, but I may consider it if I decide to actually take the LPI certification. If I thought it would secure me a job, I'd seriously consider it. On the other hand, I suspect I probably know most of the level 1 stuff, probably a good percentage of level 2 as well. |

...maybe taking the exam is a good way to document and prove what I know... Do you agree? |
