A homebrewer's recipe calculator. I needed one so I wrote one. Use this to formulate recipes for ales, lagers and stouts. It also includes a brewing primer for those just starting out in the homebrewing hobby. QBrew builds and runs under Unix (Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc), Mac OSX and Windows.

I remember as a wee lad of 8 helping my dad cap the bottles after filling them. That was fun Smile

I also remember that it was potato beer that he made, and that he had one batch the went nuclear on him and started blowing up bottles in the cellar. Smile

Well, although I try to stay in the realm of Linux as much as I can, there are cases where you really need to use the best tool for the job. and in that case, ProMash is the hands-down winner.

http://www.promash.com/

Yes, it's propritary and runs only on Windows, but I've used it for both homebrewing and when I was brewmaster in a micro-brewery. and when it comes to formulating recipies, making calculations for water adjustments, and just about any other brewing calculation, it can't be beat.

If someone would like to use Promash as a template to creating a native Linix application, I'd be happy to switch, but until then, it's one of those apps that keeps me gritting my teeth and booting to windows every now and then.

Does promash run under wine?

Guess what? It runs perfect under CrossOver Office. Wink
Not sure about the new wine version.
I would think it would though, thier page says it runs under wine.

All I have is the Eval of promash.
So I could not test the full version.

I've tried it a few times with less than great results. Can't get it to print a recipe and stuff like that. Based on the loss of functionality, it's easier to boot to Windows.

I e-mailed the writers way back when, about a Linux port, but they said that they had reports that it worked under wine, and had no plans for a Linux port.

It's one of those very specialized programs that doesn't have wide spread appeal, and I can't imagine total sales numbers are all that big to begin with, so I imagine that the number of Linux desktops is going to have to soar before they have any incentive to create a native Linux port.

You could mention something about compiling it with Winelib to them.
As far as I know, they don't have to modify their code much.

Does anybody think it is funny that a program for brewing beer runs under Wine? It struck me as funny when I read it.
