I downloaded all the required files, which was quite a few for Suse. This I found to be the only downside. This program has several plugins for languages, and since we are trying to teach spanish to Chase worked out to be quite ideal. For every sound .rpm I downloaded the English and the Spanish files.
Installation was easy enough, though I wish there was a batch installation option with Suse. But again that isn't gcompris' fault. As soon as it was done installing I started it up. The GUI was very easy to navigate. The opening screen gave the user many options. So after checking it out myself I decided it was time to test it with Chase.

Chase decided that he liked the matching games the best of all the activities for his age group. He is almost 3 if that explains what he understands. It's amazing how fast he caught on. After me helping him with the mouse for the first two games of concentration he took over on the mouse. Moving the mouse and clicking on different cards. Even remembering which ones he had already clicked on.
After the game of concentration we played the train matching game. He did rather well for a 3 yr old on this one as well.
We then tried out the coloring activity.

I would have to recommend this application to anyone with young children. I feel that this is something that Chase will be using for quite a few more years. Smile

GCompris, when I read the title, I knew it was french.
J'ai Compris = I understand.
G in french is pronounced exactly like J'ai.

I will give it a go, but my girl isn't even 2 yet.
If there's anything that'll mkae a 2 year old happy, it's Caillou and anything that makes noise.

Thanks for the review Coastie, One of my sons wants to be a grade school teacher (in his second year of college right now), and he wants to get the kids interested in open source. This will be an excellent way to do that, if he just takes in an old computer with Libranet or Mepis on it, and includes this kind of educational stuff. If you stop to think about it,.... Linux seems to be all about having many educational apps and programs available. Where is Billy Boy when it comes to being part of the basic install? Hmmmmm?
Just for instance, Libranet's KDE has 15 entries under edutainment. Obviously, money is NOT the bottom line with Linux. It says a lot about the character of those involved when education is an important part of the distribution, at least it does to me. Thanks again coastie, I'm going to d/l that for him so he can get a chance to play with it. Very Happy

coastie, you mentioned "batch" installing...

Create a directory and place all the RPM files in it. Open a terminal and su to root. cd to the directory with the RPMs. Then:
