|
|
Iam going to build a ltps server for about 10 thin clients that consist of
Pentium 200Mhz - 32MB RAM - Floppy - 2mb video card - 100Mbit 3com
I want to install Fedora red Hat with LTSP 4.41 Ive just downloaded the iso
BASICALLY the terminals will run>
openoffice
gimp as photoshop
firefox for web pages
xine for video
xmms for mp3 playback
So I want a server for this type of clients and that can playback mp3 and divx
I have thought of
Athlon 64 opteron
1,5GB RAM ECC cas2
Serial ata 10k
Any idea of mobo???? another micro??? a change in memory????

Have you looked into K12LTSP at all ? Basically it's a Fedora system with LTSP already installed.
As for your server, for 10 clients, I would say anything 1.7 ghz or above would suffice fine. I ran a 1.3 ghz server with 5 clients for awhile, worked fine for me. The main thing is to get 2 network cards in your server. If you could afford it, gigabit technology has made LTSP VERY fast, but it does cost quite a bit more than your standard 100mb stuff. As for ram in your server, the more the better As for your clients 32MB RAM should work, but i'd go to 64 or 128(even better). You would probably need pc100 or pc133, which would be very cheap (if not free).
Welcome to usalug, and please keep us updated on your LTSP. I for one would be interested in your progress

What about the main memory???
Is it very important to be cas 2 ecc????
Because here inArgentina they are very expensive.... so I can save many greens and for example buy a bigger and faster HDD, which I read in k12ltps.org that in ltps is much more important the Hdd than the memory and microprocesor....
with regards to the network speed, Iam thinking of buying a 100mbit 24 port with one 1Gbit for the server
And instead of placing 2 Nics on the server I install only one, because as suggested in k12ltsp.org, the server shouldn t be directly connected to internet for security, so in my LAN a zyxel modem-router with DSL is NAT-Firewall and connect automatically to internet.
Any suggestion?????
Iam not very sure what Iam doing...... am I wrong???
I would really appreciatte any suggestion

meltech ,
My server was using plain old PC133 ram, so I'm SURE that as long as you have an adequate amount of ram, your server will be more than sufficient for your 10 clients.
As for 2 nics, if that's what they suggest, then they probably know best. I never worried about my server being connected to the net, but that was just me. Perhaps there is some other security issue that i've not heard about, which wouldn't be too suprising, as I haven't ran my K12LTSP setup for about a year or two. Alot can change in that amount of time
I would definately suggest subscribing to the K12LTSP mailing list. Those folks definately know LTSP and Fedora.
Most importantly, have a GOOD backup plan in place, that way when things go wrong, you can recover with minimal efforts.
