I ran across this article, and even though it's old, it was pretty informative.

Setting up LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) and SUSE Linux Enterprise 9 for PXE Support

This document is a quick step-by-step setup guide for the installation of LTSP on top of the latest distro release of Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SLES 9, which is leveraging kernel 2.6. The steps are pretty much in line with the steps described in the documentation available from ltsp.org for LTSP 4.1, except for a few things. So this document complements the official documentation, and also demonstrates the feasibility, without too many hurdles, of setting up a LTSP server over SLES 9 for supporting PXE.

My overall experience with LTSP has been very positive. Within half a day after downloading LTSP for the first time ever, I was up and running on top of SLES 9.

The first step is to obtain SLES 9 from Novell. As of September 2024, it is possible to download the distro for free from http://download.novell.com and obtain a 30-day access code for support and downloading updates. After 30 days, support must be purchased. See http://download.novell.com for details. The procedure for SLES 8 should be fairly similar if not identical.

After you have successfully installed SLES 9, with default options, it is a good idea to assign a static IP address and change the host name to something meaningful like ltspserver.

Once SLES 9 is up and running, you can download the LTSP installer from http://www.ltsp.org for release 4.1. You have the choice between a RPM or tarball/TGZ version. My preference goes for the RPM version.

I haven't tried this yet for open suse 10, but my guess is that it would work pretty much the same way. Worth looking at the rest of the article if your going to install ltsp on suse. Lots of screenshots.

Based on a presentation I found on http://www.ltsp.org I found that you can run quite up to date versions of LTSP on Debian-based systems, thanks to some work on the Ubuntu project, which was accepted into the overall Debian project. Mark Shuttleworth, the one who funds Ubuntu through his foundation, has built some very large LTSP implementations through his South African foundation.
But even IBM and CVS (the drugstore chain) have implemented LTSP on a large scale.

Markmcs, my next door neighbor, got some old laptop computers form a company who was getting rid of them. He turned them into LTSP client systems, and they seem to run pretty well. Mark might want to look at the latest LTSP 4.2 implementation, though. You can run it from Sid or Etch, and it has even been backported to Sarge on Debian systems. That means SimplyMEPIS, for example, can run the latest version. Worth a look, for sure!
