Quote:
The Linux Incompatibility List is an attempt to catalog and document hardware/peripherals of all kinds that do not work with the Linux operating system.

Fortunately, at this point in time, there is far, far more hardware that works without any problems with Linux, so this site aims to make Linux users aware of hardware to avoid (or if you want to be famous, hardware to write free drivers for).

We make an effort to explain the reasons for lack of Linux support, and how incompatible the hardware in question is. For instance, some hardware may only work with a proprietary driver (limiting it to x86 platforms most likely), other things might not work too well because the manufacturer doesn't provide specs, and still others might simply be so new that no one has written a driver yet.

This site is a wiki, which means anyone can edit the text.

[thread necromancy] there is a site that links off that page which claims to help identify your driver requirements based off of the output of lspci -n (from an up-to-date but i686 database only) - brilliant idea, home-baked kernels get easier for the newcomers

link is here

So, did this tell me anything about why it was so hard to get Linux to work on this box?

Code:
Debian GNU/Linux device driver check page

BTW, my processor is an AMD Semperon, from the tag on it, and the paperwork when I bought it, not an Opteron, if that makes any difference Wink .

real question or rhetorical?
did your distro(s) of choice offer the option of rolling your own kernel as part of the install process?

My point is that the link provides an HCL based off of your lspci which has to be a whole lot more relevant than simply providing acres of html dedicated to HCL when
a) the newcomer doesn't even know what lspci is or how it might help him/her (so admittedly the flaw here is that the author provides a way to achieve the same in the prevailing os of choice)
b) you have linux installed and certain devices don't work - why would you want to read up on all the HCL when you only need to know what needs to be enabled in the kernel?

The tool has value if you roll your own kernels; if you want linux to be an omnipotent/omniscient alternative to windows where you perceive your input to be clicks of a mouse (which is fine) then the link will be of little value

Linux/*BSD = choice so we all win

Just to clarify, the issue of sempron vs opteron i.e. which is in your box has nothing to do with the website; the lspci output is specific to your box and tells you that your (evidently later generation) sempron is based onk8-64 tech - no surprise there - today's silicon production is no different than 'branded' cars coming off a line with basically no difference other than seat trim, body colour and badge (VW, Audi, and Skoda would be the best example - of all the parts, relative to production cost, the biggest differentiator in what the customer buys would be the badge

more here:
K8 Sempron CPUs are based on the same core as Athlon 64 processors, with some of processor features limited

Thanks jester, I don't "roll my own kernels" yet, but I've been giving some thought to learning to do that Wink .
